North korea
1. This is a great article written with great insight on a topic I have great interest in. "No clear exit strategy" is the understatement of the century, In effect, isn't that where the armistice has left the U.S.? A 60 year quagmire, albeit without live fire, unlike the quagmires in Iraq and Afghanistan. The North Korean people are slowly beginning to transition their collective, xenophobic mindset through the proliferation of black market cell phones, smuggled Western multimedia like DVDs, etc. They will gradually reeducate themselves out of the Juche Stalinist cult they have been immersed in. Of course, this will be a slow, painful transition given the horrific consequences of public executions, concentration camp internment for your entire family and other totalitarian destruction. "Brainwashed" and "broken" are two segregate circumstances. The broken would be the ones the author describes as not fleeing to China and resisting potential liberators; military holdouts that eat grass, sleep with their AK-47, and rabidly hate Americans. Two world wars emboldened the United States into our position as the de facto policeman of humanity. Unfortunately, as we learned in Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan and Korea, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. The consequences of the potential fallout on the Korean peninsula could be massive and catastrophic on many levels. As Americans, they will be our cross to bear...yet again. When I was a kid, my mother admonished me to "clean up my mess". She, of course, was right. This is what happens when you don't do it at the first opportunity.
