Googars take finalBREWARRINA’S strike power with
ball in hand spearheaded the Golden
Googars to an entertaining 48-32
Barwon Darling Cup rugby league
under 17s grand finalwin against a
courageous Collarenebriat Walgett’s
No 1 Oval on Saturday August 18.
The 17s decider pitted two great at-
tacking sides and just like the 14s de-
cider, 15 tries flowed in 50 minutes.
Brewarrina coach Barney Orcher
said he gave his side a rev-up at half-
time when they trailed 22-18 toan
enthusiastic Collarenebri.
“I just told the boys they had to
want it, they needed to try a little bit
harder,” Orcher said. “We came there
to win.”
The coach’s words helped lift the
Golden Googars and they stormed
home to grab the 17s premiership.
Brewarrina captain Lane Salt scored
three tries and Edward Simpson
grabbed a double as six Googars
scored four-pointers.
Brewarrina’s win also ensured three
different sides would win premier-
ships on the day.
Collarenebriwon the 14s,the Goog-
ars the 17s and eventually Bourke
were crowned senior premiers.
Brewarrina halfbackKieran Ford was
named as Ronny Gibbs medallist for
a quality playmaking effort.
Like all good ballplayers, Ford looks
to have plenty of time and poise
when in possession.
He scored one try and laid on plenty
of others.
Orcher felt Ford was his side’s best
but said it was a strong team perfor-
mance.
“It’s great for the community to win
a premiership ... a lot of people were
very happy for them,” Orcher said. “I
was very proud of the performance.”
Brewarrina manager Kevina Ben-
nett said she was also proud of the
premiership-winning 17s.
“They played great all season and
deserve the win,” Bennett said.
“Grand finals always bring out skills
in players that I haven’t seen before.
Barney Orcher has done an amazing
job with the coaching and these boys
are fantastic players.”
Collarenebricoach Chris Kirkland
was “tickled pink” with his side’s ef-
fort despite the 16-point loss.
The Bulldogs were thumped 68-nil
when they played the Googars a
fortnight ago in a match that handed
Brewarrina the minor premiership.
But in a show of character, Collarene-
bri made a difficult trip to Bourke for
the preliminary finaland beat the
Warriors 64-32 before lifting again
in the grand finalto challenge the
highly talented Brewarrina outfit.
“It was a great effort to stick it to
them (Brewarrina),” Kirkland said.
“I thought we controlled Lane Salt
and DerekEyre pretty well for a lot
of the game but the bounce of the
ball didn’t goour way late in the
contest.
“We turned around our last effort
against Brewarrina and I was pretty
happy really.
“The boys showed a lot of character
which is all you can ask.”
Kirkland said.
The Barwon Darling Cup competi-
tion’s highest point scorer in the un-
der 17s was Brewarrina’s DerekEyre
(96 points, 14 tries, 20 goals) while
Collarenebri’s Shaun Morgan (15)
was highest try-scorer and Bourke’s
Billy Brissenden was the 2012
competition best and fairest.
