Four Features to Detect Counterfeit Banknotes Since the introduction of the Euro in 2002, the European Central Bank withdrew some six million counterfeit banknotes. Although the European Central Bank (ECB) implement a Feel, Look and Tilt method into their banknotes, there is no denying that these counterfeiters are experts in the field of graphic design and computer science. Their finely tuned skill set aligned with the advancement in computer technology and printing machines makes it difficult for Central Banks to produce a 100% counterfeit-proof banknote. Here we have compiled a list of some of the most popular counterfeit detection features which will increase the speed and accuracy of counterfeit detection from your point of sale. 1. UV – Ultra Violet Ultra Violet Light detection is used to highlight small UV Ink fibres embedded in a banknote. The banknote itself does not emit light and is dark. In the new Europa Series 2 (ES2) euro banknotes, the stars in the EU flag, the small circles as well as the large stars glow yellow. Several other areas also glow yellow. 2. ICD – Intelligent Code Detector Intelligent Code Detector (ICD) technology determines whether a banknote is genuine or counterfeit by searching for a code hidden inside the security thread of a note. To find the security thread of the ES2 without an ICD machine, look at the banknote against the light. The security thread appears as a dark line. The € symbol and the value of the banknote can be seen in tiny white lettering in that stripe. 3. IR - Infrared Infrared is essentially invisible to the human eye. A banknote with Infrared Ink (IR) requires a scanner which can render IR visible to the human eye. Under infrared light, on the front of the ES2 banknote, only the emerald number, the right side of the main image and the silvery stripe are visible. On the back, only the value numeral and the horizontal serial number are visible. 4. MG – Magnetic Some Central Banks use ferromagnetic Ink in the serial number of their currency along with a magnetic thread woven throughout their notes. A magnetic detection machine enables the cash handler to identify a banknote's authenticity by scanning for traces of magnetic ink in the letterpress and magnetic thread patterns throughout the note.
