2. WHAT IS POWER FACTOR
POWER FACTOR IS THE RATIO BETWEEN THE KW AND KVA DRAWN BY AN ELECTRICAL LOAD WHERE THE
KW IS THE ACTUAL LOAD AND THE KVA IS THE APPARENT LOAD POWER.IT IS A MEASURE OF HOW
EFFECTIVELY THE CURRENT IS BEING CONVERTED INTO USEFUL WORK OUTPUT AND MORE
PARTICULARLY IS A GOOD INDICATION OF THE EFFECT OF THE LOAD CURRENT ON THE EFFICIENCY OF
THE SUPPLY SYSTEM.
ALL CURRENT WILL CAUSE LOSSES IN THE SUPPLY AND DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM.A LOAD WITH A POWER
FACTOR OR 1.0 RESULTS IN MOST EFFICIENT LOADING OF THE SUPPLY AND A LOAD WITH A POWER
FACTOR OF 0.5 WILL RESULT IN MUCH HIGHER LOSSES IN THE SUPPLY SYSTEM.A POOR POWER FACTOR
CAN BE THE RESULT OF EITHER A SIGNIFICANT PHASE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE VOLTAGE AND
CURRENT AT THE TERMINALS, OR IT CAN BE TO A HIGH HARMONIC CONTENT,POOR LOAD CURRENT
PHASE ANGLE IS GENERALLY THE RESULT OF AN INDUCTIVE LOAD SUCH AS AN INDUCTIVE
MOTOR,POWER TRANSFORMER,LIGHTING BALLASTS, WELDING OR INDUCTIVE FURNACE.A DISTORTED
CURRENT WAVEFORM CAN BE THE RESULT OF A RECTIFIER, VARIABLE SPEED DRIVE, DISCHARGE
LIGHTING OR OTHER ELECTRONIC LOADS.
WHY DO I NEED POWER FACTOR CORRECTION
CAPACITIVE POWER FACTOR CORRECTION IS APPLIED TO ELECTRIC CIRCUITS AS A MEANS OF
MINIMISING THE INDUCTIVE COMPONENTS OF THE CURRENT AND THEREBY REDUCING THE LOSSES IN
THE SUPPLY.THE INTRODUCTION OF POWER FACTOR CORRECTION CAPACITORS IS A WIDELY
RECOGNISED METHOD OF REDUCING AN ELECTRICAL LOAD, THUS MINIMISING WASTED ENERGY AND
HENCE IMPROVING THE EFFICIENCY OF A PLANT AND REDUCING THE ELECTRICITY BILL.

BY INSTALLING SUITABLY SIZED SWITCHED CAPACITORS INTO THE CIRCUIT, THE POWER FACTOR IS
IMPROVED AND THE VALUE BECOMES NEARER TO 1.0 THUS MINIMISING WASTED ENERGY AND
IMPROVING THE EFFICIENCY OF A PLANT.
