I have known Mr Clayton Sutherland for the past 5 years since he was appointed as
Academic Head and Graphic Design lecturer at the Stellenbosch Academy.
At the time that he took over as Academic Head, the Academy was progressive and self
critical – always open to open debate re: the various programmes.
Mr Sutherland brought all aspects of course structures, content and teaching strategies
together in a way that has been educationally relevant and subject specifically meaningful.
The benefits of his contribution to the student body have been important to both the students
and the institution.
He has been able to create and develop an educationally viable programme that is able to
compete vocationally with similar institutions. The academy has become an institution of
choice for many of the students. Students are able to articulate vertically into Honours and
Master’s programmes and the new curriculum will allow an individualised approach based on
the students’ strengths.
He is a strong leader and an asset to the discipline.
