Editor's Notes

  1. -Introduce yourself and your role at IslandWood - You are going to be giving them a lot of information during the presentation so please hold questions until the end -Introduce IslandWood as an outdoor school and not camp (explain the difference - what is similar to their school day/ what will be different?)
  2. -Get ideas from them
  3. When they decided to build a school in the woods they had student groups help with the design (ex. The windows by each bunk was suggested from the student focus group). IW was built using kids’ ideas and with the purpose of having kids here.
  4. Ask the students. Then let slides 5-7 automatically advance.
  5. Mention that they will be taking a 35 mn ferry ride or a bus on the North end of the island.
  6. unload gear, walk down the cart trail working together and unpack in the lodges
  7. - Names of the lodges and room names fit with the themes -Design-mudroom, common room (games, fireplace, etc.), solar water heater, radiant heat, field space for outdoor games, 2 floors (usually boys on one floor & girls on the other floor)
  8. -2 bunk beds & Murphy bed if necessary, drawer space, closet space, hooks, point out the windows by the bunk and the night lights (no window or night light by the Murphy Bed but it is bigger!)
  9. -3 section bathroom- Toilet and shower each have doors w/ locks for privacy and middle sink section - Someone can be taking a shower, someone else going to the bathroom and someone else brushing their teeth all at the same time
  10. - Similar rules and expectations to that of their school - Get ideas from them on ways that they can be respectful & safe at IW -Explain that each of the field groups will come up with their own community agreement based on the 3 IW rules
  11. -Explain how the EEC Program works and that we are all here working on an M.Ed.
  12. -Mention the morning routine-wake up, breakfast (lots of options), pack for the day and meet at Friendship Circle
  13. -Friendship Circle- meeting place in the morning, Wednesday night campfire, sing lots of songs, gather with the other school (if there is one)
  14. - Explain how the field groups are organized (about 10 kids, 1 IW instructor, adult from school)
  15. -Each field group will participate in some kind of team building activity every day and have a visit to the teams course
  16. -Combine art and science through different activities -Art Studio- drumming, leaf in a bag, etc -Science- water quality, microscopes, compost critters, watersheds and ecosystems * Add in info on the AIR following this slide (if there is one)
  17. -Activities designed to help students explore IslandWood- binoculars, journaling, free exploration, using senses to explore the environment -The next slide is so you can practice your observation skills. When I show the picture go ahead and talk to your neighbor and see how many animals you can find in the picture
  18. - If they are being a respectful audience (and you have a remote with a laser pointer), you can let a few students point out the animals that they see
  19. - You can provide as much or as little info on the different animals depending on how much time you have
  20. -Picnic style lunch consists of sandwiches, fruit, veggie and chips -Mid-morning and afternoon snack
  21. - Quick explanation of the many different habitats at IslandWood that the students will be exploring
  22. - At the Forest Trails picture tell them that IslandWood has 255 acres with lots of trails to explore. How many football fields do they think fit in 255 acres? (answer 194)
  23. -Hour to: rest, shower, change into dry clothes, hang out with friends, journal
  24. -Eat family style, usually mix up the field groups and schools to give the students a chance to get to know different students, assigned tables -Kitchen staff is amazing about dietary needs/restrictions – make sure to let us know on the form
  25. -Hour of Lodge Time -Evening Program- night hike, group evening program, campfire -Hour to shower, get ready for bed, journal, read, etc
  26. -Go through the slides (they will be getting a copy of the list if they haven’t already)
  27. they can bring a sheet & blanket if they don’t have a sleeping bag
  28. -Students can borrow most items that they need (rain gear, warm layers, hat, gloves, socks, water bottles, back packs). There are lots of sizes. - They don’t need to buy anything new! But they should bring their own stuff if they have it.
  29. they may be really eager to teach others about the things they learned and tell them about what they experienced
  30. -Any questions?
