shooting
threat
AN anonymous social media user who threatened to shoot
people at the University of Tasmania on Monday night will
be hunted by Tasmania Police.
University staff and students were put on alert, after the
university security team received a copy of the disturbing
post, which had been uploaded on website 4chan.
Tasmania Police were quick to act, dispatching units to the
university’s Launceston, Burnie and Sandy Bay campuses.
The threat was later dismissed.
Southern Commander Glenn Frame said an investigation
would ensue, however, with the offender linked to similar
posts towards the University of NSW and other universities
overseas.
University of Tasmania has since returned to normal and
the institution’s high security level was lowered on Tuesday.
University human resources executive director Chris
Smyth thanked police, students and staff for their vigilance
in responding to the threat.
‘‘It’s the world we live in,’’ Mr Smyth said.
“We have to prepare a plan for these kinds of
eventualities and we deal with it as best we can.”
