STUDENTS
SHAVE
HEADS
TO
SUPPORT
PEER
HENDERSON,
TN—Several
Freed-‐Hardeman
University
students
were
involved
in
a
fundraiser
last
week
to
raise
money
for
Caleb
Sams.
Twenty-‐five
young
men,
including
Assistant
to
the
Dean
of
Students
Tom
Vickery,
shaved
their
heads
to
show
their
support
for
Sams.
Sams
is
a
20-‐year-‐old
junior
Social
Work
major
at
Freed-‐Hardeman
from
Concord,
North
Carolina.
He
was
recently
diagnosed
with
a
rare
form
of
cancer
called
Sarcoma.
Malignant
tumors
composed
of
cancerous
bone,
cartilage,
fat,
muscle,
vascular
or
hematopoietic
tissues
are
considered
sarcomas.
Doctors
found
the
tumors
in
Sams’s
left
leg
and
lungs.
He
began
chemotherapy
treatments
to
treat
the
cancer
in
January.
To
combat
the
disease,
Sams
will
have
to
undergo
a
35-‐treatment
series
of
chemotherapy.
Jake
Wilbanks
(pictured)
is
one
of
the
young
men
who
volunteered
to
shave
his
head.
“Shaving
my
head
didn’t
really
seem
like
that
big
of
a
deal
if
it
meant
Caleb
was
comforted
and
it
made
this
whole
situation
easier
for
him,”
he
says.
“It
made
me
so
proud
to
be
a
part
of
this
campus
and
to
know
I’m
surrounded
by
so
many
kind
hearts
and
amazing
spirits
that
were
supporting
Caleb.”
At
the
event,
countless
students,
including
those
involved
in
Freed-‐Hardeman
social
clubs
such
as
Phi
Kappa
Alpha,
Sigma
Rho,
and
Chi
Beta
Chi,
joined
together
to
raise
over
$2500
for
Sams.
Freed-‐Hardeman
students
Skyler
Sexton
and
Jojo
Waffird
originally
proposed
the
fundraiser
concept
at
a
Phi
Kappa
Alpha
Officer
Retreat.
Their
initial
goal
was
to
raise
awareness
and
collect
$500
dollars
to
donate
to
Sams
and
his
family.
Sams’s
father,
Kirk
Sams,
preaches
at
Kannapolis
church
of
Christ
in
North
Carolina.
