Hopes and Fears of the Modern Self. This course studies
freedom, happiness and misery in Aristotle's "Nicomachean
Ethics," Hobbes' "Leviathan", Rousseau's "Confessions,"
Dostoeveski's "Notes from Underground" and Nietzsche's
"Beyond Good and Evil." Requirements include bi-weekly
papers in the form of an "explication du texte," mid term
and final exam.
A pleasure to teach and a valuable asset in the classroom.
She is openminded but at the same time quite able to speak
her own mind, receptive, blessed with an engaging sense of
humor that carries the intelligence of common sense with it.
She is also a natural hardworker and I saw this work pay
off. Her papers are always loaded with interesting points
and over the course of the term she gradually realized what
it takes to write a paper that contains a single argument.
Her paper analyzing the narrator of Notes from Underground
showed exceptional facility and control in its examination
of several of his character failings, although she did not
quite figure out how to put the whole thing together. Her
5. final exam showed that she had pulled herself up to the
level of the top students in the class. Her analysis there
of the tension between individualism and excellence was
particularly fine. Over all, a very good performance from a
very good student.
Fall 2000 RCCORE 190 Intens French
Anderson-Burack,Carolyn
French 190 is a first-year intensive course designed to give
students a basic and solid knowledge of French structures, a
limited vocabulary, some practice in reading, speaking, and
some familiarity with sounds and intonation patterns.
Catherine's overall performance has been satisfactory. She
is to be commended for her effort at correcting her work in
the workbook exercises. She has mastererd basic grammatical
concepts as evidenced both by her exam scores and her
compositions. She speaks with relative ease although she
still needs to make a concerted effort to improve her
pronunciation. Her listening comprehension is usually quite
good. Reading comprehension occasionally presented
difficulty for her but overall it is satisfactory. It
seemed that she did not always treat class very seriously:
she used class time to complete homework assignments and was
often late for both morning and afternoon class. She
attended co-curricular activities regularly and her
attendance was satisfactory.
6. Winter 2001 RCCORE 290 Intens French
Rochelle,Marion
French 290 is a second-year intensive course designed to
bring students to proficiency level in all four
communication skills: speaking, aural comprehension,
reading comprehension and writing
Catherine's performance this semester was satisfactory. She
handed in high-quality homework, and her grammar results
were good throughout the semester. She was able to use new
structures and complex sentences in her compositions, and
her written French is mostly accurate. Her spoken French,
while quite fluid, is marred by basic mistakes. She will
have to hone this skill in her next French class. Both her
listening and reading comprehension vary from fair to very
good according to her familiarity with the topic. Catherine
needs, however, to assume a more mature attitude towards the
classroom learning experience at the college level. While
her attendance record is good, she almost systematically
arrived late for the morning class, and did not always
attend to the task at hand, though she was motivated enough
and worked well.
