MINI CUSTOM REPORTS

AN EXAMPLE OF THE PROCESS USED FOR AMAJOR EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURER
A recent study for a major equipment manufacturer was designed to understand some specific
global markets for three of their key product lines. There were two objectives: find the best

2. opportunities in five specific global regions for profitable growth and to identify what technical
advantages were needed for their products to compete in those markets.
The market analysis began with an analysis of the global value chain, with the key suppliers
profiled. As part of the primary research tasks, information was gathered on the requirements of
the companies that bought these product lines. This included what was needed in function that
was not currently offered in the current market place.
The next step was to develop the market projections for individual products on a regional basis.
These projections include a factor for socio-economic characteristics of the specific regions as
well as data from multiple sources including proprietary reports and databases. The
competitive assessment was organized alphabetically by company and included tables detailing
the financial characteristics of each competitor, a description of the company’s strategic focus
and how the company positioned its products.
Statistical analysis was used to determine the constellation of economic activities that were the
best leading indicators for each product line. Geographic markets were calibrated to the
region’s business cycle using the OECD Business Cycle Calculator tool.
The deliverables included a product database of each of the three major product lines and all
the applications which required these products. The market analysis for each of those products,
the regional analysis and the competition for each product in each product line, the competitors
on a product and a regional basis were all in pivot tables. This information is updated on a
quarterly basis. It is now possible to look at each product line, each product within the product
line, and the region and measure how the company is doing compared to what is happening in
each of those markets on a regional and application basis.
