Key Music Video Companies
Case Study:
Two significant companies which aid the release and
promotion of music videos worldwide include YouTube and
Vivo. They are internet platforms which have become popular
as a result of downloading and viewing music and associated
visuals being developed and becoming easily accessible online.
Videos on YouTube are
available to watch in
different levels of quality.
Numerical values to describe
the levels of video quality
have replaced former names
which included standard
quality (SQ), high quality
(HQ) and high definition
(HD). The website initially
allowed videos to be viewed
in one level of quality, known
and displayed at a resolution
of 320x240 pixels.
However, over the years
more levels of quality have
been introduced. In June
2014, the website allowed
videos to be viewed at 720p
HD or higher. Now, some can
even be viewed and
uploaded by 360 degree
viewable technology and in
3D which shows how
technology has helped the
site to progress and develop
hugely over the years.

Popularity:The world’s most viewed YouTube video is Psy’s music video for his single “Gangnam Style” which has received an overwhelming
2,434,243,794 views. YouTube has become so immensely popular that normal people who have uploaded videos about their lives or certain
topics such as baking, creating and comedy have even become internet “celebrities.” These include British beauty and life vlogger Zoella,
American vlogger and comedy personality Miranda Sings and Australian vlogger and baker Ann Reardon. They have become internationally
recognised as they have gained hundreds and thousands and even millions of YouTube registered users which are “followers” of their YouTube
accounts, and these are known as subscribers.
YouTube has enabled these “celebrities” to venture into other media related platforms which has made them even more successful. Notable
examples include Zoella appearing on the celebrity version of The Great British Bake Off, releasing two books and gaining a waxwork in
Madame Taussads in London. Miranda Sings has been able to promote her tour through YouTube which has enabled her to travel the world
and perform. Another British YouTuber Joe Weller has been able to release songs which have ended up in the charts through vlogging and the
release of a music video on his YouTube account too.
Vevo is also a service which allows videos to be uploaded and shared across the internet. It
was launched in December and 2009. It is operated and has been developed over the
years by Universal Music Group (UMG), Google, Sony Music Entertainment (SME), and Abu
Dhabi Media, with Google and Vevo sharing the revenue from advertisements. YouTube
and Vevo channels can become interlinked. For example, singers can use both of these
services to promote their songs and themselves in the form of music videos and
interviews. Once they have uploaded their videos to their Vevo account, they can create a
Vevo verified YouTube channel where these videos can also be uploaded too. This allows
them to promote themselves more, as well as gain more fans and allow their fans to
recognise their official videos.
REGULATIONS: Videos with profanity can be regulated to an extent by Vevo.
Some explicit videos, such as those containing profanities can be edited. According to a
company spokesperson, this is "to keep everything clean for broadcast.” This means their
network can be friendly to existing and potential advertising partners such as McDonalds.
Different explicit videos can be edited so that different versions of the videos are
produced. As a result, this means uncut and edited versions of videos can be uploaded and
classified. Apart from classifying these videos as either, Vevo has no formal rating system.
However, more discussions are arising which have involved creating a rating system which
allows users and advertisers to choose levels of acceptable profanity.
