What is the Risk?
The risk is guests binge drinking
and becoming intoxicated, alcohol
poisoning, and death
8. HOW CAN IT BE MANAGED?
These are serious risks that need to be addressed before the event!
1. Provide non-alcoholic refreshments along with the alcoholic
drinks you will be serving
2. Make sure your guests eat before they come and have food
available to them there.
3. Know the signs of alcohol poisoning

Hello everyone! JMU’s last home game is this weekend so I decided to present to you all about how to throw a successful and safe tailgate for JMU!

Quick overview, we’re going to explain the relevance of tailgating, discuss the risk involved in tailgating and how to prevent and manage it, what we need to prepare for a tailgate, make sure that everyone is respectful and cleans up and then we will wrap it up!
So we are talking about tailgating because Homecoming is this weekend and it is a big weekend o have a tailgate. We are Dukes and we want to show our spirit! And why not participate in something that we can have fun in and still be safe.
Now we are going to start talking about Risk Management…
The non-alcoholic risk involved is making sure that guests are comfortable and feel safe. Manage the risk by making sure you know your guests and that everyone is comfortable with the setting you are providing
The alcoholic risk is the effects that alcohol has on people such as having alcohol poisoning which could lead to injury or death. These are serious issues that need to be acknowledged.
The alcoholic risks can be managed by making sure you and your guests are educated about alcohol. Make sure that you provide water and other non alcoholic beverages for your guest like juices! Protein is a good thing to consume because it lines the stomach and slows the process of alcohol being absorbed into your system…
The signs of alcohol poisoning include slow pulse, heavy breathing, throwing up, loss of consciousness, and cold body temperature. These are serious signs and if you see someone displaying any of these signs it is important to get help! People you can contact are the JMU Police, 911 if you don’t know the JMU police number, and Safe Rides. All these resources are listed on the back of your JACard!
The popular place to tailgate at JMU is the convo lot so it is important to get there early enough to secure a spot. Also make sure you have enough paper cups, plates, napkins, and garbage bags so that is clean and easier to clean up after. Be prepared with the dishes you want to have available to your guests, make the dips, appetizers, and desserts the night before so things are less hectic in the morning. Make sure that all of these delicious goods have a place on a table so guests can access the food easily.
So after the preparation it is time to have fun! Relax, if your over 21 enjoy an alcoholic beverage and if your under 21 than enjoy a non-alcoholic beverage. Regardless of age there will be good food for everyone to enjoy.
For the clean up it is pretty simple tie a few trash bags on the end of the table and to your car so people don’t litter and there is an easily accessible place to dispose your garbage. At the end of the tailgate tie the trash bags find the closest dumpster and throw away all the trash from your tailgate, then pack up your car make sure you have the table and any dishes that aren’t disposable locked safely in your car!

Tailgating is fun and popular at JMU because of our campus culture! There is risk involved in having a tailgate whether it is alcohol or non alcohol related. It is important to be aware of the risk and be prepared to manage it! Preparing for the tailgate is easy you just need to purchase the items for food and eating, bake/prepare the food, and make sure that you have a space for your tailgate. Finally be accountable for everything you brought and make sure it is either thrown away or packed…
