Beer Tweets and Ancestry
By Bryan Chandler
Illustrator & ArcMap Overlay Results
Upon initial analysis, the data
does not indicate a strong
correlation between German
ancestry and the location of
the beers shown in the Zook
Tweet map.
Beers with brewing styles
originating from Germany do
not always fall within areas
of higher German ancestral
reporting.
Further analysis may yield
more conclusive evidence to
support or deny the theory
that ancestry has an effect
on beer selection.

ArcMap
•Arcmap submission showing

the 2000 Census.
•Tabular data joined to Census
Tiger County Shapefiles to
allow for classification and
symbolization.
•Classification method
selected was Jenks using 6
classes.
•Data was normalized by using

be county.
Adobe Illustrator – Original Map
•Original map from Patterson,
Mark, and Nancy Hoalst
Pullen. The Geography of
Beer. 1st ed. Springer, 2014.
212. Print.
•Matt Zook and his research
partner, Ate
Poorthuis analyzed almost a
million “geocoded beer
tweets” produced between
2012 and 2013 that were
drawn from a larger database
known as DOLLY, a university
of Kentucky project that
houses billions of location-based
tweets, to determine
what beer brands get
discussed on social media all
across the United States.

Adobe Illustrator – Edited Map
•Map was recreated
in Adobe Illustrator.
•Layer was created
for each beer brand,
