The next dozen slides or so will compare Word, Excel, and PowerPoint across these three classes of platform.
Comparing Word’s opening screen on the HP Envy TouchSmart desktop (Windows 10 computer), Galaxy Tab 4 7” tablet (Android 4.4.2),and Motorola Droid Maxx phone (Android 4.4.4) to Microsoft Office Mobile (Motorola Droid Maxx – interface identical to Windows Phone 8.1)
“Home” screen on HP Envy TouchSmart (“computer”) compared to HP Stream 7 (“tablet”) – both running Windows 10. Note that the ribbon bar is hidden (it pops up once you touch a tab). Note the “Acrobat” tab is missing from the tablet version.
Portrait and landscape modes on the Tab 4. Note the “Draw”, “Design”, “References”, and “Acrobat” tabs are missing.
Smartphone interface. Note that the menu bar has been reduced to five options: Format (the A with a pencil), Search/Find, “View Reading Mode”, “Share”, and “Undo”. The default “Home” (formatting) ribbon is reduced to icons. Changing ribbons requires invoking a pop-up menu by pressing the “up” arrow in the lower right corner of the screen.
Excel. Note that the opening screen on the Galaxy Tab 4 doesn’t provide options for a “new” presentation unless that option is chosen from the left-hand menu.
Windows 10 in three views: computer, tablet (landscape), and tablet (portrait). Note the pop-up ribbon bar in landscape mode.
The Galaxy Tab 7” shows icons for a simplified formatting menu, while the Droid Maxx has the same sort of pop-up menus as we saw in its implementation of Word.
The 10” iPad Air 2 has enough resolution and screen space for verbal descriptions of the icons. Compare with the Droid Maxx, which requires pop-up menus to describe program features without completely blocking the document itself.
Once again, the Envy TouchSmart and the Stream, and the Stream’s pop-up “home” menu.
The iPad (10”) version includes Draw” and “Animations” menus which are missing from the Galaxy (7”) and smartphone versions. Note that both Microsoft Office Mobile and PowerPoint on the smartphone open in Presenter View by default.
Droid Maxx.
More screenshots from the Droid Maxx – here the “Themes” submenu, the pop-up menu, and Presenter View.
