4. Muscular pain has always been prevalent due to mainly bad body posture and muscle
fatigue. Due to a shift to the new normal of work from home culture after emergence
of Covid-19 pandemic, more people even from younger age groups are complaining
about muscular pain, maybe because of lack of ergonomic working conditions at home
and/or overstrain due to no self-control on working hours at home.
The lower back pain problem is one of the most common among modern generation
people. Factors such as sedentary lifestyle, hectic working hours, and lack of exercise
are attributing to back problems among people. As surveyed by The Good Body,
around 80% of people in America will have some kind of back pain at some stage of
their lifetime. Further, it has been projected that nearly 10% of people in the world
have lower back pain problems and the number of such people is increasing gradually.
According to a research conducted by the Mental Health Foundation in the U.K., in
2018, 74% of the population have experienced extreme stress that they felt
overwhelmed and were unable to cope. Similarly, as per a research conducted by the
American Psychological Association, 77% of Americans regularly experience physical
symptoms, which are caused by stress. These symptoms include fatigue, headache,
upset stomach, muscle tension, teeth grinding, and dizziness. Along with that, 73% of
the population experience psychological symptoms caused by stress, which include
irritability, anger, and nervousness. Occurrences of the aforementioned symptoms are
expected to play a crucial role in promoting the scope for massage equipment in the
near future.
The use of massage equipment provides immediate relief against such issues and with
proper workouts, back problems can be cured completely. As per the American
Massage Therapy Association, various health problems associated with old age can
also be treated by Massage. Problems such as blood pressure, body pain, and dementia
can be solved with the proper use of massage. Currently, around 9% of the world
population is above 65 years plus and this number is projected to be around 17% by

people with diseases such as blood pressure, osteoarthritis, dementia, and others.
Thus, the aforementioned reasons are anticipated to augment the use of massage
equipment over the forecast period.
This study discusses some of the recent patent and technology trends in body
massagers. However, before we start analyzing or evaluating the trends and activities
in this domain, it is imperative to understand the various terminologies, evaluation
parameters for patenting activity, etc. used in this study:
Evaluation Parameters for Studying Patenting Activities
Patent activity herein is a measure of innovation and globalization in terms of patent
applications for the period 2000 onwards. Patent applications are counted in terms of
first filings and foreign filings. First filings are an indicator of innovation and inventive
activity, while foreign filings are an indicator of an intention for international trade
and of globalization.
Further, all the data presented here is restricted till 2020 as patent applications having
their first filing data in 2020-2021 might not be published yet (there is an 18-month
lag between filing and publication of patent applications).
Relevance Criteria for Screening and Shortlisting documents
As a first step, all those documents were screened that discussed body massager
techniques and their usage in various human body parts. The shortlisted documents
were further analyzed in detail to identify more relevant information.

30. INSIGHTS & CONCLUSION
The study reveals that vibration based massaging devices are more prevalent in terms
of patent filing as compared to other massaging techniques and most of the massaging
devices are designed for back followed by feet, genitals, and neck portion of the body.
Patents disclosing hands and shoulders massagers are also good in number. It is also
interesting that patents focusing on eyes, face and genital massagers are rising
continuously. The patent filing has been continuously rising since 2000 with a short
dip around 2005-07 and again rising tremendously around 2009. Applicants from China
and South Korea has been actively working in this domain since the early 2000s.
Almost more than 50% of the filed applications are alive. Some of the prominent
assignees from the perspective of number of patent applications comprise Panasonic,
Family Inada, Diato Electric, Loreal SA, Shenzhen Breo Technology, Philips, Bodyfriend,
SKG Tech, Ceragem and LG Electronics. A number of universities and hospitals also
have filed good amount of patent applications in this domain. Looking at the patent
activity in this domain and comparison of patent strategies by major players, it won’t
be wrong to say that many new applications in massaging devices will be filed in
coming days. Integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) in
massaging devices hints towards an age of smart massagers.
The global massage devices market has been seeing remarkable growth in recent years.
Rising product awareness is likely to lead to lucrative growth of the massage devices
market. Easy availability of these devices through a wide range of distribution channels
is likely to influence the growth of the massage devices market. In addition, continuous
worldwide growth in the business of spa & beauty parlors, salons, relaxation centers,
etc. who opt for portable massage devices is likely to influence the growth of the
market. Major factors that are expected to boost the growth massage equipment
market in the forecast period are the rise in the stress-related ailments. Furthermore,
the increase in the middle-class population in the advancing countries is further
anticipated to propel the growth of the massage equipment market. As per a study
report, electric massagers market is estimated to grow by USD 6.38 billion globally
during 2021-2025 with a CAGR of 5.83%. Pressing massagers have been very popular
especially acupressure and Shiatsu model.

31. INSIGHTS & CONCLUSION
On the other hand, the rise in the trend of alternate healing therapies and self-
massage techniques is projected to impede the growth of the massage equipment
market in the timeline period. Apart from that, since people has recently started using
massaging devices, a significant lack of confidence exists in the mind of new
consumers. These products are generally marketed to promote well-being through
relaxation, de-stressing and relieving muscle tension. However, user surveys
determined that the vibration was often ineffective and sometimes painful during use
and afterwards. The vibrating function made the product too noisy and disturbing to
promote relaxation. Massaging devices also have a stigma attached to them; the
massage effect is generated by vibration, which tends also to be associated with sex
aids. In addition, the actual size and weight of the products are too big and heavy to be
used comfortably. Solo use and massage is difficult thus limiting the benefits of the
massage.
COVID-19 outbreak has negatively impacted the product demand, customer behavior,
logistics services for products, and the availability of essential and non-essential
products at retail stores and factories. End-users are opting for alternative solutions
such as yoga, fitness, recreational activities, and natural therapy, to obtain relief from
stress, fatigue, anxiety, etc. Rising trend of using relaxing music, steaming solutions,
piercing, and traditional healing practices are also likely to be major challenges to the
growth of the market.
It’s hard to say when in the next few years, we will find the technology strong enough
to replace human masseurs. But when we do, we can expect the speed of growth to be
potentially faster than typical technology-adoption curves, which are already
accelerating. Without a massive upfront cost being borne by consumers, and if the
above discussed challenges in product design are addressed, there is a potential for
growth metrics.
