2. “The Dairy Of A Young Girl” is a dairy or according to me it is a historical non-fiction
book based on the true events written in a pattern of diary by Anne Frank. This is a
diary which cannot be considered as a Novel because it is written in a raw format. This
dairy portrayed the two year tragic scenario of World War 2 faced by Frank Family who
belonged to Jewish community which was considered to be a community unpardonable
by Nazis.
Anne Frank began her dairy by addressing the Dairy as “Kitty”. She started the diary
with a note that said:
“Dear Kitty,
I hope I will be able to confide everything to you, as I have never been able to
confide in anyone, and I hope you will be a great source of comfort and support.
Yours, Anne”
This note showed that she was helpless to find anyone for being confined or spacious
for sharing her inner feelings. This helped us analyze that Anne wasn’t connected
emotionally to neither of her parents (Mr. Otto and Mrs. Edith Frank) nor her sister
(Maggot Frank) to share her feelings about her life. Due to this Anne started
penmanship her daily life in a dairy.
Heading further there were several Characters mentioned and described in this diary
including the writer Anne Frank. But there were 4 characters who played an important
role in this Diary.
ANNE FRANK - She was the writer of this dairy, born on June 12, 1929 in Frankfurt,
Germany. She was a pretty teenage girl who was quite intelligent and mature. Her
nature was mutable throughout the dairy as she encountered various events and
hormonal changes due to puberty. Though she had a innocent nature but she was
turbulent sometimes due to fear and depression. She died in one of the concentration
camps in March 1944 due to Typhus.
OTTO FRANK- He was Anne’s Father who was the closest to Anne than other. He
belonged a wealthy family. He was very practical and had an exceptional nature. The
3. diary portrayed him a ethical and elegant person. He was very helpful to everyone for
letting his office hideout to his acquaintances and fellow workers. He was the sole
survivor from his family after the War who published Anne’s Diary.
MARGOT FRANK- She was Anne’s Elder sister, 3 years older than Anne. She wasn’t given
much importance in her dairy but the instances portrayed her nature. She was pretty,
smart and emotive in nature. But as of during the period where Anne and Peter Van
Daan shared feelings with each other, Margot was feeling jealous and aroused.
PETER VAN DAAN- He was the son of Van Daans who became the closest to Anne when
they were living together in the annex. Earlier he seemed conservative, obnoxious and a
sensitive person but later on he experiences romance with Anne which drives out the
fear and depression among each other.
Moving ahead towards the Theme of the book, we can notice that the story revolved
around the pier of selfishness of Nazis, Loneliness of the Jews and the struggle for
uprising and freedom. The sheer terrors at sleepless nights of Anne brought up that it
would be the most difficult time for everyone hiding in those days. The alertness of Otto
and his fellow friends showed the fear of death. The greedy wartime brought these
situations and led to degrade many people to death. “All people in annex slept daily
for 2 years in a death bed.” One of the attracting lines by Anne in her diary which
described her loneliness and fear was “I see the eight of us in the Annex as if we were
a patch of blue sky surrounded by menacing black clouds.......It looms before us
like an impenetrable wall, trying to crush us, but not yet able to. I can only cry out
and implore, “Oh, ring, ring, open wide and let us out!”
“THE DAIRY OF YOUNG GIRL” is a dairy which will be always appreciated as it is the
famous Holocaust time period book. A Dairy mentioned in the history of the world with
an end of an era. It is a thought provoking book, laden with innumerable instances of life
skills. A book which can be learned by any age and any nationality. This book is an
example to the present teenage generation that living a life is easy but surviving in a
closed annex for years and in concentration camps brings out the importance of life and
4. family. The fear, terrors of bombarding and depression, some or the other day
makes the person stubborn and fearless. As it is said “To conquer death, a person
has to die several times”.
This book has made a tremendous impact on the society and my soul. While reading it
one can experience those situations of getting trapped into a small house with gloomy
days and fired nights. It taught us how to become stubborn from being a lonely
adolescent and a stressed teenager. It reflected the human greed of wartime and
importance of freedom. It made us realise the liveliness of our relations and surviving
the situation.
Concluding the Book Review as it began with few words mentioned by Anne Frank,
“I’ve reached the point where I hardly care whether I live or die. The world will
keep on turning without me, and I can’t do anything to change events anyway. I’ll
just let matters take their course and concentrate on studying and hope that
everything will be all right in the end.”
