Leadership
Meaning of leadership
Leadership, in my opinion, is a skill that is employed at all
levels of every organization . Leadership is used by top
executives, managers, and contributors to move activities and
initiatives ahead. Acquiring leadership abilities that make you a
good leader is a goal that everyone may strive for at any point
in their career, whether they're leading a team or a meeting.
Characteristics of a good leader
In their individual and professional lives, effective leaders
demonstrate attributes of leadership listed below, cheering
others to act and design a path to achieving development. Great
leaders consistently put important skills into action daily to
maximize the benefits of these attributes .
a) They are self-aware and prioritize personal development.
Good leaders put effort in improving their interpersonal
skills. They are more flexible, strong, and open to input from
others. They're good listeners who are willing to try new things.
Goal setting, prioritizing goals, and taking responsibility for
implementing them can all help improve self-awareness and
personal development.
They can better manage their time and attention by
engaging in these practices. By establishing separations
between their career and personal life, workers follow in the
footsteps of their leader. By maintaining awareness of one's
strengths and shortcomings, as well as any potential sources of
bias that could influence one's thinking and decision-making.
Conducting self-evaluations and soliciting feedback from
colleagues, as well as defining quantifiable performance
objectives in areas where there is space for development.
b) They put emphasis on improving coworkers
In situational leadership model, leaders adjust to how a
person or teamwork is prepared, motivated, and competent to do
specific actions. They are responsible for designation and
training. These personalities will assist a person in proving
leadership skills through supporting others within a group.
Hiring and building a dynamic workforce with varied
abilities and backgrounds, as well as providing coworkers with
the tools and space to create trust between themselves. Group
members can prosper by prioritizing development within a
company and matching it with culture. As a coach, such a
capable leader demonstrates both strength and sensitivity.
Effective leaders understand how to be assertive while yet being
kind.
c) They encourage strategic thinking, innovation, and action
When planning and implementing company decisions
effective leaders evaluates both internal and external aspects of
the organization such as workforce requirements. Retaining a
flexible attitude as well as a desire to explore new ideas will
help achieve this. This is particularly true for startup
executives, as company goals change regularly and inflexible
strategies can be difficult to implement. Activities like
brainstorming and prototyping can help your team be more
creative and innovative. They set a realistic goal for their
organization, as well as appropriate goals. They implement
SMART goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic,
and time-bound.
d) They practice effective cross-cultural communication.
Respected leaders can effectively communicate with
employees, functional departments, the firm as a whole, and key
parties. Leaders must recognize and respect existing
communications practices in a globalized industry. Leaders
should communicate effectively the corporate goals, specific
goals and accountabilities. Consistently sharing these objectives
and outcomes ensure that everyone in the organization is
conscious of the organizational objectives.
When they engage, they use passion, assurance,
motivation, and enthusiasm. Optimistic leaders can feel when
their company is striving toward a better future and value their
employees' accomplishments to that objective. When
appropriate, leaders should adjust their communication styles to
accommodate various cultural norms. Some cultures need clear,
specific claims, while others depend on circumstances. Some
cultures are also more expressive than others when it comes to
expressing emotions.
Differences between Leader and Manager
A leader is an individual with the capacity to guide and
lead others. By shaping and molding their conduct, they offer
their efforts proper direction and purpose to accomplish the
projected objective. A manager, on the contrary, is charge of the
top management. They manages everyday activities, keeps up
with market trends, inspires employees to team up, and
organizes all resources, etc. When it comes to the source of
authority, a leader has informal power because of their
attributes like knowledge, skills, and abilities. A manager, in
contrast, has official control due to their title or position inside
the organization. When it comes to method, a leader takes a
proactive approach because they can anticipate future
occurrences and take safety measures beforehand, while a
manager takes a reactive approach since they wait for the proper
moment to initiate action.
Types of leaders
Throughout my profession and professional experience in
the marketing sector, I have met a variety of leaders that have
tremendously inspired me. They are as follows.
Transactional Leader: Such leaders who can influence their
followers through social transactions. They incentivize their
employees by recognizing them for outstanding production,
which encourages them to strive towards achieving the goal.
Transformational leaders inspire and stimulate their followers to
work hard to achieve incredible results. A transformational
leader is someone who takes the initiative to make things better.
Charismatic Leader: A charismatic leader is one whose
enthusiasm, passion, and personality influence motivation to
behave in a certain manner. They are powerful because of their
heroic spirit and bravery.
Visionary Leader: A visionary leader is someone who can create
and follow a goal that is not only feasible but also attainable.
They have psychological appeal, which causes individuals to be
affected by the leader's aspirations.
Leaders that inspired me
My internship provided me with a once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity to discover who I want to be in my profession.
From the company's marketing manager, I learned about my
passion for marketing and leadership skills. What I like about
the leader are his characteristics. He was undoubtedly a gifted
entrepreneur who was able to anticipate market needs. I made a
lot of mistakes, but my manager always encouraged me to do
better the next time and keep a positive attitude. The manager
was usually cheerful and eager to assist others in the
department. His talents inspired the team to collaborate
harmoniously.
Leadership traits to develop myself
1) Leading by example
Leaders must provide a good example for others to follow.
If employees witness their boss doing one thing and saying
another, they may follow the latter of the laws and accept what
is being said without fully understanding what the leader is
attempting to achieve. I want to show leadership in a new
project by taking the necessary steps to get it started and
displaying what has to be accomplished. I must ensure that
perhaps the team is organized in such a way that everyone is on
the same page. As a result, everyone will be aware of their roles
in the project and will be capable of contributing equally to it.
2) Delegating tasks and making team members better
By properly structuring my team, identifying the strengths
of all team members, and delegating work, I will be able to
bring the projects to a successful outcome. In the event of
collaboration with other departments, I will assess all
backgrounds to ensure that each employee can accomplish what
they are best at. Delegating responsibilities and integrating the
talents of coworkers to form a team effort results in
achievements that are impossible to achieve when each
department works independently.
3) Facilitation of communication
One of my primary goals in self-development is to improve
my communication skills. I want to create an open and
accessible workplace to ensure that expectations are clear and
that communication is open.

Internship role and industry challenge

Yoshitimo Management Consulting Co. Ltd.
I am a marketing intern at Yoshitimo Management Consulting
Co. Ltd. I assist the marketing manager, to who I report to, to
complete tasks revolving around preparing marketing proposals,
conducting customer surveys, and research customer trends. I
also work closely with the company’s marketing team, sales
team, and marketing administrative assistant.
A contemporary issue impacting the field of business that my
internship is in is providing a return on investment of the
marketing proposals I make. One of my responsibilities as a
marketing intern in the company is to prepare marketing
proposals and presentations in relation with the needs of the
organization. Here, I am expected to provide a rough budget
regarding the programs I propose that should influence revenue.
Therefore, I am required to understand how effective each
specific marketing campaign will be. I should also understand
how the content I create will be. This issue affects the industry
a lot.
In many companies, marketers struggle with making return on
investment (ROI) because tracking it on each marketing activity
is not an easy task. Even though ROI plays a vital role in
showing the success or progress of their campaigns, it is
difficult to track in cases where the marketer and sales team do
not have effective communication or working relationship that
allows the market to follow up on the sales report . In my case,
for example, I have only worked in the company for almost five
months now. I am required to collaborate with the sales team to
get these reports. Yet, there are no solid policies that propel the
sales team to provide a daily report to the marketing department
concerning their activities.
A fact to consider is that sometimes they are distributed in
different areas, and only converge on Saturdays to compile and
report their activities. Therefore, I have to wait for a weekly
report, which must first be discussed by the marketing team,
which must pair their activities with the sales report, before
they can provide it to me. I then use these to make marketing
proposals and presentations based on the areas that I believe
require attention. Hence, there is no strong teamwork to help me
follow on the weekly marketing activities, which leaves me
struggling with making the right decisions. In addition, the
information that I have to analyze is about lead and trade show
successes. There is barely any data on failures experienced
during these activities.
This challenge impacts the industry by making it difficult to
provide accurate ROI reports. Therefore, companies sometimes
find themselves over-investing in the wrong markets, and under-
investing in the right markets. This is not good for the
company’s revenue projection. Recently, Yoshitimo
Management Consulting Co. Ltd. learned about this problem. To
handle it, the management is working with the IT department to
create presentation software design and use ground
presentations with presentation analytics as a feature to offer
concurrent data from the sales teams and the marketing teams as
they work in the field . The good thing about this is that I will
get to keep track of every activity on both teams, and do not
have to rely on their weekly reports, which could also be based
on biased conclusions. This way, I will be able to better
measure stakeholder interests in the various regions and
therefore, advice the company on marketing strategies. I will
also be better placed at creating a workable marketing budget
that I can recommend to my superiors.
