1. 11 colleges or universities in North Carolina offer wrestling
programs.
North Carolina (7) is second only to PA with (11) in the
country for the most division I programs.
Greensboro, NC host the most prestigious high school pre-
season tournament in the nation every October in “The
Super 32”.
Daniel Ownbey from Enka High School became the first 2x
NCAA Champion for UNCP last season.
Nick Gwiazdowski became NC State’s first 2x NCAA
Champion last season and will go for 3 this season.
Carolina Coaches Breakfast 4 Wrestling
The second annual Carolina Coaches Breakfast to promote wrestling in the state of North Carolina
will take place at the State Farmers Market Restaurant in Raleigh on Wednesday, October14th at
9:30 am. The purpose is to bring the 11 collegiate wrestling programs in the state of North Carolina
together and give a preview of our upcoming seasons to the public. Eachhead coachwill speak for
three minutes while highlighting the key
matches on their schedule, talk about their top
returners and the outlook on the 2015-16
season. It will also give high school and college
coaches a chance to talk recruiting. High school
coaches, retired coaches,wrestling officials,the
media, and fans are encouraged to attend to
celebrate the 112th season of collegiate
wrestling in the U.S. In 1903, Columbia
University wrestled the U. of Penn in the first
college dual-meet.
The state of NC has much to be proud of in the wrestling
community including numerous NCAA Champions,
hosting the NCAA Tournament in the Dean Dome at
Chapel Hill in 1994, and possessing the second most
division I collegiate programs in the country,with seven.
Only Pennsylvania has more with 11.
Last year, Duke,NC State, UNCP,St. Andrews University,
Gardner-Webb and Davidson were represented. Also, 2x
NCAA champion Nick Gwiazdowskiwas in attendance.
He will attempt to become a rare 3x NCAA Champion in Madison Square Garden in mid-March.
Also, senior Daniel Ownbey,a former wrestler for Enka High School in Asheville, NC, became the
first ever 2x NCAA Champion for UNCP. Coaches are encouraged to bring schedules, posters and t-
shirts to give out to fans, and restaurant workers.
