THE essential purpose of every book on teaching must be to help teachers in their actual daily work. In this way only can it effectually assist them when they offer themselves for examination in that work. An answer to a question on the practice of teaching is valuable exactly in proportion as it shows that the writer has not only read about the subject, but has assimilated the principles laid down in his text-book and made them part of that living thought which finds expression in the daily work of the class-room.
