FUTURE SOCIO-ECOOMIC DEVELOPMET OF AGRICULTURE OF
AGRICULTURE TO THE PEOPLE OF KENYA.
Agriculture is the art and business of cultivation of the soil, crop production and
animal husbandry. The significance of Agriculture to alleviate poverty and facilitate
economic growth and development cannot be over looked. A report done by World
Bank in the year 2005 revealed that two thirds of the World population which are poor
and live in the rural areas are dominated by agricultural practices. In addition,
evidence available clearly shows that sustainable poverty eradication with socio-
economic development and improved livelihood is possible through economic growth
and development. This is possible though Agriculture since as much said, it is the
backbone of socio-economic development.
Agriculture is fundamental in socio-economic development and growth. For
instance,35% of the Kenya GDP and 40% of the exports are contributed by
Agriculture. Therefore increased agricultural production especially for local and
international consumption and markets will result to notable increase in the country’s
socio-economic development. Increased production of flowers, vegetables, fruits and
animal products such as milk, eggs, hides and skins for both local and foreign markets
results to job creation and employment which results to social-economic
development.
Moreover, improved and increased purchasing power of population results to
industrial products such as farm inputs such as fertilizers and machinery among many
others therefore results to market for other industry’s outputs. In this case, agriculture
directly or indirectly promotes of other industries.
Agriculture results to off farm employment either directly or indirectly. Improved
infrastructure such as roads for transportation of agricultural inputs and outputs results
to a better socio-economic development. For instance, roads meant to transport farm
inputs and outputs make it easy for the people of the particular locality have easy
access to the market, health facilities and other institutions. Improved access to
improved health services results to a healthy population which is able to provide
labour and engage in productive Agriculture activities. Improved infrastructure also
results to growths of town’s and shopping centers. This consequently becomes places
for employment. For instance in tea and coffee collection point’s small business
people put up shops and kiosks which create self-employment.
The main objective of the strategic plan in realizing the vision 2030 is ensuring food
security. Food security will ensure a healthy population which in turn results to
population growth. This consequently leads to greater labour force. Provision and
availability of labour ensure socio-economic growth. Increased labour force results to
increased food production and hence a food secure and healthy people.
Food provision in Agriculture is in terms of crop products such as roots and fruits.
2. Moreover cereals like maize, wheat, and others a vital in food security. Animal
products include milk and meat. Given that the greater Kenyan population primarily
relies on maize and its products, hence proper and increased production of maize will
lead to achieving of the vision 2030.
In conclusion Agriculture will greatly lead to socio-economic growth and
development through food production, employment and job creation and industrial
growth.
