Japan has a population of 124 million people and its capital and largest city is Tokyo. The official language is Japanese and the currency is the yen. Japan is made up of four main islands and thousands of smaller islands located off the eastern coast of Asia. Earthquakes are common in Japan due to the collision of tectonic plates under the islands. Some of Japan's most famous landmarks include Mount Fuji, Kinkaku-ji temple, and Meiji Shrine.
