Friends and family bid last farewellHUNDREDS of mourners
were due to gather today
to celebrate the life of an
inspirational Suffolk art
teacher who died at the
age of just 27.
As many as 500 people
were expected to be pres-
ent at Tattingstone
Church for the funeral of
Kate Talmadge, of Capel
St Mary, who died in her
sleep on January 15.
Besides family and
friends, many of Miss
Talmadgeās former stu-
dents were expected to be
paying their respects.
Miss Talmadge was
well-known in Ipswich
and Stowmarket, having
taught hundreds of stu-
dents at Holywells High
School as an art teacher
before moving to a new
role at Combs Middle
School in September.
Students in Ipswich
and Stowmarket were
said to be extremely upset
on hearing the news of
Miss Talmadgeās death.
One pupil, Esme, wrote
on The Evening Star web-
site: āMiss Talmadge will
be terribly missed by
loads of friends, family,
workmates and pupils.
āMiss Talmadge was a
very talented person who
shall never be forgotten.
āMiss you so, so much.ā
Earlier this week a new
charity in Miss
Talmadgeās name was
launched to carry on her
legacy of motivating
youngsters to succeed.
The Kate Talmadge Art
Travel Award, conceived
by her family and backed
by The Star, Suffolk
County Council, Ipswich
Hospital and The East of
England Co-op Society,
will offer an annual bur-
sary for students in the
county.
Yesterday the Star
reported that the first
major donation of Ā£1,000
was made by The East of
England Co-op Society.

Funeral of tragic art

Consultants helping doctors in Egypt
SCREENING TO SAVE LIVES: Ipswich Hospital consultant Barnaby Rufford and Ayman Ewies with a col-
poscopy camera in a clinic at Ipswich Hospital. Picture: IPSWICH HOSPITAL
CONSULTANTS from Ipswich
Hospital are teaming up with doctors
in Egypt to help introduce the
African countryās first cervical can-
cer screening programme.
Gynaecologists Ayman Ewies and
Barnaby Rufford travelled to
Alexandria to teach their peers how
to perform colposcopy ā a technique
using a camera to visualise the neck
of the womb which forms part of the
screening process for cervical cancer.
Mr Ewies said: āSince the UK intro-
duced a screening programme for
cervical cancer 20 years ago thereās
been a marked decline in the number
of cases ā so much so the programme
is respected across the world.
āIn the Middle and Far East, and in
Africa there is no screening pro-
gramme and as a result many women
die.ā
Mr Rufford said: āThis was the first
colposcopy course in Alexandria and
it was very well received.
āWe hope to host an Egyptian doc-
tor each year at Ipswich Hospital to
continue the transfer of skills.ā
ā ā Have you been helped by the gynae-
cological team at Ipswich Hospital?
