interactivewayof creatingandmaintainingBOMduringthedesign andsourcingphaseof the
project.ActiveBOMcan begeneratedbygoingto‘Project’ tab,selecting‘AddNewtoproject’
andclicking‘ActiveBOM’.
GeneratingFabricationOutput
Anewfilewill beaddedtoprojectdocumentslistwith BomDocextension.
1.ActiveBOMprovidesaflexiblereal-timeviewof theBOMduringthedesign phase.If a
newcomponentisadded,theActiveBOMwill beautomaticallyupdated.
2.Another cool featureismaintainingthepartchoicesfor each devicein theschematic.
You can haveaprimarysolution andseveral secondarysolution.If you clickon anyrow
in theActiveBOMdocument,you’ll seeaprimarysolution with supplier information in
thebottom tab.
3.You can addalternatechoicesbygoingtoAddSolution button,selectingalternatepart
number andclickOK.
4.You can alsoprioritizethesolution listbygivingeach solution aStar rating.Thesolution
with thehigher ratingwill bedisplayingasprimarysolution andothersassecondary
solutions.In thisway,you can changesolutionsif thereisan availabilityissuewith the
primaryone.

2. Design Rules Wizard:
Generallywhen wearesettingdesign rulesfor schematicandPCBdesign,thedesign rules
applytoeveryentityplacedon theboard.Thisrestrictstheuser from customizinghisrules
basedon thenatureof thecircuitblocki.e.power supplyor Analog/Digital circuitryetc.
Altium resolvesthisissuebyprovidingDesign RulesWizardin which you can setcustom
design rulesfor specificNetsor NetClasseson theboard.Theserulescan alsobeprioritized
in comparison with normal rulesasper requirements.
Steps For Setting Custom Rules:
1.RulesWizardcan beaccessedbygoingtoDesign tabandselecting‘RulesWizard’.
2.On thenextwindow,wecan selectconstrainttypesuch as‘ClearanceConstraint’.
3.After selectingconstrainttype,scopewindowopensupin which wecan limitthescopeof
ruletoindividual Nets,NetClassesor theentireboardetc.
4.After settingtherule,theruleshouldshowupin the‘Rules’ list.Thepriorityof each rule
can alsobeprioritizedin thesamewindow.

For thesamplecircuitgiven below,acustom rulefor GND Nethasbeen setwhich hashigher
valueof clearanceconstraint.
Thepriorityof theGND ruleissethigher than thenormal rule.After theapplication,thePCB
copper ispoured.Theoutputisgiven here:
Wecan seethatall theGND NetsandPadshavehigher clearancethan therestof thenets.
3. Release Management
After thecompletion of aPCBdesign,thefinal taskusuallyistosendappropriatefilestothe
fabrication/assemblyhousefor fabrication andassemblyof PCB.Altium Release
Managementfeaturesprovidesextensivehelpin thisregard.You can selectfilesfor different
functionsor tasksandthistool neatlyorganizestheappropriatefabrication outputfilesfor
thefabrication/assemblyhousetouse.
Steps For Generating Fabrication Outputs
1.Togeneratefiles,you havetocreatean outputjobfile.Goto‘File’,select‘New’ andclick
‘OutputJobFile’.

choicei.e.either in PDFformator in separatefolders.Todothis,you havetofirstclickon
container typeandthen clickon thefilesthatgowith thatformat.
GeneratingFabricationOutput
After finishingtheconnections,clickon each container typeandclick‘GenerateContent’.
Thegeneratedoutputswill beatthepath specifiedin thecontainer box.
3. SmartPDF
Altium offersan interactiveversion of PDFthatcan begeneratedknown asSmartPDF.In this
version of PDF,devicesareclickableandtheir propertiescan becheckedupon clicking.
Furthermore,wecan efficientlysearch aparticular partbyitsname,designator or anyother
parameter.
