2. OVERVIEW OF ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
• INTRODUCTION
• HORMONES
• PITUITARY GLAND
• THYROID GLAND
• PARATHYROID GLAND & PHYSIOLOGY OF BONE
• ENDOCRINE FUNCTION OF PANCREAS
• ADRENAL CORTEX
• ADRENAL MEDULLA
• ENDOCRINE FUNCTION OF OTHER ORGANS
• LOCAL HORMONES
3. All the physiological avtivities of the
body are regulated by two major system :
NERVOUS
SYSTEM ENDOCRINE
SYSTEM
4. ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
• Consist of Endocrine glands
• Also called as Ductless Glands ( because the
hormone secreted by them are released
directly into the blood without any duct.
• Endocrine glands are the glands which
synthesize and release the classical hormones
into the blood.
5. FUNCTION OF ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
• Endocrine system functions by secreting some
chemical substances called Hormones.
• It’s play an important role in Homeostasis &
control of various activities in the body
through their hormones.
6. ACTION OF ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
Endocrine system works via cell-to-cell signaling
CELL-TO-CELL SIGNALING:- Refers to the transfer
of information from one cell to another ( through
some chemical substances called CHEMICAL
MESSENGERS)
• It’s also called cell signaling or, intercellular
communication.
7. CHEMICAL MESSENGERS
• The chemical substances which involved in cell
signaling is known as chemical messengers.
• These messengers are mostly secreted from
endocrine glands.
• All the chemical messengers carry the
message from sigaling cell (controlling cells) to
target cells
8. CLASSIFICATION OF CHEMICAL MESSENGERS
1. ENDOCRINE MESSENGERS
Transported by blood to the
target organ or tissues.
e.g. Growth hormone &
Insulin
2. PARACRINE MESSENGERS
Transport through interstitial
fluid.
e.g.PGs & Histamine
3. AUTOCRINE MESSENGERS Acts on same cell.
e.g. leukotrienes
4. NEUROCRINE MESSENGERS
A. NEUROTRANSMITTER:-
Transport of messengers
through the synaptic cleft. E.g
Acetylcholine , Dopamine
B. NEUROHORMONE:- Transport
of messengers through blood .
E.g. Oxytocin
9. •Chemical messengers are usually
classified into two types:-
1.Classical Hormones ( secreted by
Endocrine Glands)
2. Local Hormones ( secreted from
other Tissues)
