Canada Day in
Bury and Hatley
By Antoine Airoldi
Record Correspondent
What once began as a sports day for athletes
soon became Canada Day in Bury, Que. This
year marks Bury’s 89th edition. The event is
organized by the Bury Athletic Association and
has been since the early athletic years.
Bury’s Canada day is a two-day event,
from July 1st to July 2nd. Tim Brink, the great
singer that appeared on La Voix, will perform on
Friday, July 1st
at 9 P.M. under the Memorial
Park tent.
On Saturday, July 2nd, there will be a
fishing derby. The fishing derby will have great
prizes given by one of many that sponsor the
event: Pro-nature Cookshire.
Pancakes will be available for breakfast
at St. Paul’s rest home, followed by children’s
face painting, Strawberry Shortcake,a sale of
local products and crafts at the Armoury. United
cultural centre’s salad plates will also be
available.
At noon, you can expect the Parade on
Main Street. The parade will happen down
Mclever and Main Street. During the parade,
people will see beautiful floats, a marching pipe
band, and 6-8 horse hitches as well as many
other entries that make the parade one you will
not want to miss. The Kid's Corner will follow
shortly—after the parade has ended.
The Kids’ Corner will have three
inflatable slides, dunk tank, Bell and hammer,
family friendly food at the cantine and a small
petting zoo.
Once the Kids’ Corner’s activities are
over, there will be Children’s Olympics, and it
will allow ages 2-13 to race. After the first race,
ages 14-17 will run, followed by 18 and over.
Gymkhana is the following event. It has
been present for the last 89 years. Gymkhana is a
speed pattern racing along with timed games for
riders on horses. Gymkhana is one of Bury’s
central themes. Along with it, there will be
BarrelRacing, Pole Bending, Key Hole, Dash
Race,Round Ring and the Figure 8.
Once Gymkhana has ended, there will
be a mechanical shovel competition. To bring
ease to the evening, various artists will perform.
The artists that are going to be present
on Saturday are Mike and Kylie, Carole
Vincelette, Rainbow Country Cloggers and
Country Swingers. Spectacular fireworks will be
visible from 10 P.M. to end the night.
Admission is $10 for one day and $15
for a two-day pass. Many local non-profit
organizations will be present along with
volunteers that work hard to meet their
customers’ satisfaction—they will make the
event a success. For more information, you can
