Ster-Kinekor Entertainment (‘SKE’) is the official distributor of Sony PlayStation
hardware and Software. Hardware including PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 and
PlayStation Portable. As well as Representing Software Publishers: Sony Computer
Entertainment, THQ, Bethesda, Capcom, Konami, BlackBean, D3P and Southpeak,
across the following platforms PlayStation, Xbox, Wii and PC. Bringing a stream of
entertainment to South African consumers.
Mr. Andre Potgieter I.T. Executive at SKE embarked on a Tintri POC which from
day one reflected immediate benefits. The deployment consisting of two days
including data migration had zero impact on his operational environment (no
down-time). The entire production system of 6.1 TB’s runs from Tintri’s flash
drives and ensures the sub-millisecond performance (the previous storage
platform consumed 14 TB’s), after adding 100 fully operational VDi users it
consumed a total of 6.2 TB’s and this took all of 20 minutes to deploy. Says Andre
Potgieter “We have seen Tintri perform at upto 26,000 iOPS from a single host,
albeit currently on our 1Gig environment”
SKE’s previous hardware incumbent vendor recommended a mixed
workload platform environment, meaning one platform for Server (VCi),
one for Virtual Desktop (VDi) and another for their future planned Bi
(Business Intelligence) project – with the Tintri investment SKE will have
space and capacity for further virtualisation projects which were
previously ‘put on hold’. Tintri allowed SKE to realise that investing further
in existing platform(s) would not make business sense as that legacy
architecture was already at 90%. Tintri’s ability to run mixed work-loads on
one platform is further endorsed by VMware and this is being taken full
advantage of – “this was a silver bullet for us” says Andre Potgieter, SKE.
Support is offered by the vendors in-country depot (4 hour response on-
site break fix) as well as the reseller/ system integrator whom provides
skills and Tintri service levels too. The Tintri easy management and
‘visibility’ was also a compelling factor, the previous storage platform
was extremely hands-on and LUN storage management as well as
Storage VMotions were resource intensive too, with Tintri this ‘pain’ has
all been eliminated – Andre Potgieter, SKE.
