2. According to the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), almost 90
percent of seniors wish to “age in place,” or to stay in the comfort of their own
home as they age. However, more than one in three seniors over 65 experience
a fall every year — an experience, which, more often than not, happens inside
their own homes.
Jon Pynoos, a UPS Foundation Professor of Gerontology at the USC Leonard
Davis School of Gerontology, says that small home renovation projects can help
mitigate the risks for senior family members.
More Seniors Encounter Accidents at Home
The University of South California (USC) says that when seniors fall, they are
almost always likely to avoid severe injuries, incurring only minor bruises or
scraped knees.

3. However, falls that occur in the bathroom are different and may pose serious
risks. This may be because bathrooms have slippery surfaces and only a few
dependable things to hold on to. Slipping inside bathrooms may, therefore, lead
to a range of injuries, from minor scrapes, bruises, and cuts to hip fractures,
broken bones, head contusions, and even spinal cord injury.
To reduce these risks, Pynoos and the AARP recommend simple home
modifications. Through small home projects, seniors can avoid accidents, dodge
health care costs, and sustain independent living routines.
Small Home Projects Can Help
AARP identified some of the housing features that seniors find important. These
changes will be helpful down the road, as they begin to experience poorer
balance, reduced eyesight, and reduced flexibility.
80% of seniors deemed non-slip bathroom floor surfaces important. Bathroom
aids, including grab bars, meanwhile came at a close 79%.

4. According to Pynoos, while the cost of modifications are massively lower than
potential medical costs caused by home accidents, most older adults struggle
with making modifications for a variety of reasons. Most are unable to implement
the changes themselves, some can’t afford the improvements, and others see
contractors as untrustworthy.
