Two people died after collision of Turkish general cargo ship Gokbel with another Belize-flagged merchant ship Lady Aziza on December 28, 2014. After the collision caused by thick fog and poor visibility cargo ship Gokbel with 11 people on board sank a mile from the Italian port Ravenna in the northern Adriatic Sea.
Two people were reported drowned and another 4 are still missing at sea feared dead.
All people from the sunken cargo ship Gokbel were with Turkish nationality, said on Italian state TV, Fabrizio Matteucci, the mayor of Ravenna.
âThere are two victims and four missing,â he said, adding that he had received the latest information from the coastguard leading the rescue operation, which was hampered by âprohibitiveâ sea conditions and fog.
According to initial information from Franco Maltese, coast guard commander, 6 crew members were rescued and transferred to hospital in Marina di Ravenna port, one of which later died. He also added that SAR (search and rescue) team spotted what was believed to be a corpse in the choppy waters and the fire department of Ravenna confirmed that the body was found and brought ashore.
The search and rescue operation was later suspended due to darkness and bad weather conditions on the scene of the collision between the 86-meter-long Turkish ship Gokbel and the 97-meter-long Lady Aziza.
Cargo ship Gokbel was leaving port and Lady Aziza was entering when the collision occurred on Sunday.
