Question 3
What kind of media institution might distribute your media
product and why?
For example, a horror film that Anchor Bay Entertainment
have distributed is The Lords of Salem, released on
September 10th 2012 it was directed by Rob Zombie Its
budget was $1.5 million and it’s box office was
$1,165,882. Anchor Bay Entertainment were able to enter
the film into the 2012 Toronto Film Festival, this would not
have been possible without the distributors connections
they have. This enabled the film to have a wider release
and receive reviews for example Fangoria and The
Playlist gave positive reviews for the film.
We thought Anchor Bay entertainment would be an ideal
distribution company because they have experience in
marketing independent horror films. They would have the
understanding of how to distribute as widely as possible
with consideration of the small budget we have
designated with our film. We would consider our film to
be independent because of the budget we would have
set it which is low and has very limited production. For
example, we only had one camera to film with, very basic
lighting and means to create mise-en-scéne and low
profile actors.
We originally thought that Vertigo films
would be an appropriate distributor but
there was such limited information about
how they previously distributed their films
that we weren’t sure if it would be the right
choice.
Production
We would produce the entire film with the technique of
guerilla films because the budget we would have would not be
large enough to pay for the right to film in certain locations.
The majority of the shots we would film would be inside a
house so it would not be completely necessary anyway. The
locations we filmed in would be real because we would not be
able to afford a studio in which we could recreate sets.
Again, due to the limited budget that would be available
to us we would only have one DSLR camera (Cannon
60D) to hand which would lengthen the amount of time
it would take to film. We would have a skeleton crew to
save on costs. We would have to use prosumer off-the-
shelf editing software, once more, because we would
not have access to the expensive professional editing
software used by the 6 major Hollywood studios.
An example of a studio
used in creating high
budget films. We were
not able to afford
something like this.
Distributing
We have chosen to market on social networking sites
as it’s free and an easy way to reach wide audiences
and connect to the positive technological determinist.
We would post our trailer on Facebook, twitter, Tumblr
and Google plus by linking it from YouTube. This will
allow us to viral market our film and reach the core
target audience (typically 16-24 male) We live in the
modern world with web 2.0, meaning that it gives
audiences the ability to interact with media content.
The Internet is a participatory media, so it allows
us to personalise content, including media content.
We will make posters to advertise online. We can
also create a trailer to be a quick and easy way for
consumers to get a synopsis of the film. We can
post the trailer on various forms of media such as
Web 2.0, TV and in the cinemas.
We would use a blog to post information about the
progression of the creation of our film. By posting extra
information about our film we can create greater interest with
the audience. Forums are another great place to generate
buzz for horror. We can use our Unique Selling Point on both
the blog and forum to captivate the audience from the get-go.
USP~ IT IS BELIEVED THAT FOLDING 1000 PAPER
ORIGAMI CRANES WILL MAKE YOUR WISH COME TRUE.
HOW FAR DOES THIS SUPERSTITION GO?
Distributing cnt.
We would make all our advertising and film available
to technologically converged products like smart
phones, androids, htcs, blackberries and tablets. We
would make an app available for free download that
contains further information of details (things like
release date, the making of, premier of trailers and
computer posters) that would allow audiences to
interact with content to peak their interest further.
Word of mouth would be one of the best distributing
techniques for us to use.
Due to our low budget and our stylistic film we have
decided to exhibit our film at Curzon cinemas. These
cinemas are small venues located in London
Exhibition
we cannot directly target our desired audience
however we can exhibit using social networking sites
that we have mentioned previously. By using social
networking site we have a greater risk of people
pirating our video content.
Here are some film festivals we would exhibit our
film at. This way we will reach a wider range of
people and make our film known across different
countries. By showing our film in Cannes film festival
we can increase the release in certain territories.
There will be scouts from the larger studio
companies that go to festivals to decide whether
there are any films worth investing money into.
We would also enter our
film into film contests
such as:
Funding
We have decided to use Kickstarter to help us
fund money for our project, as it is independent
we only need a low budget so therefore
Kickstarter is a ideal website. It allows people to
lend out small amounts of money to help ‘kick
start’ a project which they believe in, eventually if
enough people donate you should have enough
money to complete production.
We can also go the the BFI to ask for funding, this
kind of funding is know as soft-funding and is most
common amongst independent films. To do this we
would need to take our treatment and USP to
package our key attributes to show them why they
should invest in our film. We would have to work
hard to convince them to invest money into our film
because there would be a lot of competition from
other film producers. The film market is in a
constant state of slump and boom so investors are
often extremely cautious when it comes to lending
out large amounts of money.
