Wild orchids in parts of central and southern Africa are being eaten into extinction as their tubers are coveted by Zambians and used to make chikanda, a nutritious and cheap dish. The popularity of eating chikanda has recently spread across Zambia, driving intense harvesting that has depleted orchid populations. Orchid tubers are now imported from Tanzania to meet demand. If sustainable management practices are not implemented, many rare and endemic orchid species risk being wiped out by the unsustainable harvesting of their tubers for chikanda.
