I have known Mr. Ahmed Abdelsattar (* 8/11/1988) since October 2011 when he participated in
the course “Economic Reforms” that I gave at Marburg University (Germany) where Mr. Abdel-
sattar is enrolled in the Master Program on “Economic Change in the Arab Region”. The course
contained a theoretical introduction on policy making in different institutional environments, a
discussion of reform aims (Washington consensus and beyond), problems of reform (distribu-
tional conflicts, uncertainty, credibility) and the sequencing of different reform measures.
Mr. Abdelsattar was one of the most engaged and lively students in class discussion and distin-
guished himself in his contributions through a thorough understanding of economic theory and
policy. He was well able to connect class discussion with real world experiences and applica-
tions from his own country and the MENA region more broadly.
He also prepared a term paper, as part of the requirements for the course, on “Banking Sector
Reform in Egypt” which provided a detailed and original discussion of the topic that well integrat-
ed the material we covered in class. It was the best essay out of eights essays handed in and
received 12 points (out of possible 15 points).
I have come to known Ahmed Abdelsattar as a very engaged, careful and intelligent student as
well as a very nice and friendly person. I would rank him among the top 10 percent of his class.
I am convinced that he will prove to be an asset for any internship program and I recommend
