The document provides guidance on pitching startups effectively. It discusses the three fundamental pillars of an effective pitch: the contents, order, and design. It recommends beginning with a one minute elevator pitch describing the problem, solution, audience and unique approach. The pitch should tell a story and demonstrate the solution through a demo. Timing is critical, aiming to take less time than expected. Body language and practicing are emphasized to improve delivery and confidence.
3. There are 3
fundamental
pillars to an
effective
startup pitch
presentation
The contents you include (what
you say and what you don’t say)
The order you present the
contents (what you say first)
The design that brings the
contents to life

5. Start your presentation with a
“One-Sentence Pitch Format”
“my company, _(insert name of company)_, is developing _(a defined
offering)_ to help _(a defined audience)_ _(solve a problem)_ with _(secret
sauce)_”.
Adeo Ressi, Founder Institute founder.
Defined offering: short, simple and capable of being understood by everyone.
Defined audience: initial group of people that you will market your offering to.
Solve a problem: The problem needs to be something that everyone understands.
Secret sauce: your unique approach to solving the problem.

7. Everything begins with
the description of the
problem

8. Solution
The sentence that explains your
offers in a synthetic and effective

11. Timing is critical. The
less time your pitch
takes, the better.
• The more concise you can
be, the more effective you
will be.
• If you say that you’ll take
“only X minutes,” then take
at least one minute less.
• If you are told, “You only
have X minutes to pitch,”
then take at least five
minutes less.

• “Pretend that for everything you say
there is a little man or woman on your

13. Tips - Find a schema
to help explain.
If what you do is really niche and
difficult for the average person to
understand, you can help explain it
by using a schema—knowledge the
person already has that will help
them understand what you do.

content.

and gives the listener a pleasant feeling.)
