2. 1.1. Why Do We Celebrate Teacher’s Day:
In India, September 5, 2022, is celebrated as Teacher's Day. It also comes on the same day as
the birthday of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakirshnan, the second President of India and a prominent
scholar who received the Bharat Ratna award. History claims that when Dr. Radhakrishnan's
students asked him to celebrate his birthday, he advised them to observe Teacher's Day on
September 5 instead.
It would be his "proud privilege" if September 5 were marked as Teacher's Day, in his words,
rather than his celebrating his birthday separately. Since 1967, the day has been observed for
this reason. It represents the first attempt to consider how teachers may be honored in the
same manner that Dr. Radhakrishnan's life is remembered in Indian history.
1.2. The “Great Teacher” Dr. Radhakrishnan:
When he was only 30 years old, Dr. Radhakrishnan taught philosophy at Chennai's
Presidency College before moving on to Calcutta University. Additionally, he was appointed
vice chancellor of Andhra University and Banaras Hindu University. After completing his
time at these universities, he quickly traveled to Oxford, where he lectured in comparative
religion at Manchester College in 1926, 1929, and 1930. He then accepted a position as the
Haskell lecturer at the University of Chicago.
Dr. Radhakrishnan has endowed his country with service in a variety of roles, according to
Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. He is a fantastic teacher, and we have all learned a lot from him and
will continue to learn from him. The odd privilege of having a great philosopher, educator,
and humanist as president belongs to India. That alone demonstrates the calibre of men we
value and respect. Dr. Radhakrishnan and Nehru had a good friendship. Both were frequently
spotted together, and numerous pictures of them were taken.
