HAVEN’s Computer and Internet Use Guidelines
Revised 3/20/15
Introduction
The use of the shelter computer here at HAVEN is a privilege offered to our guests. The actions of any one user should not negatively
impact the work or computer usage of another. The use of HAVEN’s computer for purposes that violate HAVEN’s policies, are illegal,
or are unethical may result in temporary or permanent loss of privileges, criminal penalties and/or other action. Please follow the
following conditions of use.
Conditions of Use
a. The computing resources of HAVEN are available for use by guests at our shelter and staff members only.
b. Internet access is available between the hours of 7 AM and 11 PM. If your circumstances require access outside of these
hours, please contact an advocate.
c. Users of HAVEN’s shelter computer will have their access filtered by Microsoft Family Safety and K9 Web Protection. This
means that access to social media, adult content, and other questionable content has been filtered for your safety and the
safety of others. This also means that staff can track websites visited, downloads, and other general areas of computer use
if a need for such information arises.
d. Please save all work to removable media such as a USB thumb drive.
e. The HAVEN computer is publically accessible to all shelter clients and in a common area, so for the sake of confidentiality,
please refrain from saving personal data on it, and always remember to log out of online accounts when you are finished.
f. HAVEN cannot guarantee that a particular user can and/or will have access to the computer system at any given time.
g. HAVEN is not responsible for any damages resulting from the receipt and/or transmission of any electronic information.
h. HAVEN reserves the right to change or amend the Computer and Internet Use Guidelines at any time.
i. If these conditions are unacceptable to the user, then the user is advised to not take advantage of HAVEN’s computer
access.
Computer Use Policies.
a. Please do not:
i. Eat or drink at the computer station.
ii. Violate any software license agreement or copyright, including copying or redistributing copyrighted computer
software, data, or music.
iii. Save work to computer hard drives unless given permission by an advocate.
iv. Delete or copy files from computer hard drives unless directed by an advocate.
v. Load or run software programs or games on HAVEN’s computer without permission. This includes toolbars,
browser add-ons, instant messenger programs, etc.
vi. Deliberately crash or attempt to crash a system. System crash is defined as the stoppage of a computer system
due to a hardware or software failure in a component or system during operations, which renders it unavailable
for use.
vii. Install a virus or spyware of any type, destructive or non-destructive.
viii. Transmit language or images, which in the opinion of HAVEN advocates, are obscene, vulgar, or abusive.
ix. Use HAVEN’s computer to harass or annoy others, or to prevent them from legitimately using the
computer. Specifically, to use electronic means of any kind to send unsolicited messages having obscene,
demeaning, and/or menacing content.
x. Attempt to remove any or all of HAVEN’s computer system and accessories from its designated place.
xi. Attempt to damage or destroy any or all of HAVEN’s computer system provided for communal use.
xii. Adding a password on the shelter account which prevents others from accessing the system.
b. Should a user run into any sort of technical issues while attempting to access the computer, please contact an advocate for
assistance.
Violations of Policy
a. Abuse of computer privileges is subject to disciplinary action, and may include loss of said privileges and other disciplinary
sanctions up to and including dismissal from the shelter and/or civil or criminal prosecution.
b. If a user violates HAVEN’s computer policies, a written record of the violation(s) shall be maintained by the Direct Service
Supervisor, and the following consequences can result:
i. Warning: Alerting a user to a regulation with the understanding that any recurrence of the behavior will result in
disciplinary action.
ii. Loss of Computer Privileges: Limitation or removal of computer privileges, including restriction from the use of
computer facilities for a period specified by HAVEN officials.
iii. Restitution for Damages: Reimbursement for repairs to computer-related material, equipment, hardware,
software, facilities, and any other cost associated with the violation.
iv. Other Consequences: Other disciplinary action may be taken.
Printing Policy
a. You will be provided with a small amount of blank printer paper on request when admitted to the shelter. Please use this
wisely, as
b. If there is something that you need to have printed which will require a lot of paper, please contact an advocate for
assistance.
