2. South India got established as a tourist
destination only in the late 70s.
Mahabalipuram and Trichy became very popular
in the late 80s besides Thanjavur’s potential as a
tourist destination was identified in the same
period.
The 90s witnessed mushrooming of different
category hotels in different pockets of the region.
Catering to events like wedding, corporate
meetings and giving rise to restaurant dining
culture started bringing in more revenue.
3. From a city with a booming IT industry,
Bangalore is fast emerging as a centre for

35. During 2013, the industry is estimated to have added
more than 2,000 rooms to its branded room inventory
(growth of 10.9%).
In a weak macroeconomic environment, this significant
fresh supply outpaced the growth in demand, putting hotel
occupancies and room rates under considerable pressure.
Going forward, the industry’s active development
pipeline is estimated to be about 5,000 rooms, which will
enter the market in the course of the next 4-5 years.
Therefore, while we are optimistic about a revival in
demand this year, the impact of the inventory overhang on
the hotel industry’s operating metrics is likely to persist for
at least another 12-18 months.
This is particularly the case in cities such as Delhi-NCR,
Bangalore, Chennai and Ahmedabad, which have seen the
maximum addition in terms of fresh supply.
36. With the addition of over 3,000 rooms in the 4 and 5
star categories in the last 18 months, the international
to domestic traffic ratio in hotels has become 50:50.
The addition of room inventory has also resulted in
competitive pricing, making hotel rooms attractive to
domestic travelers. Some hotels in the IT hubs and the
city centre see high international traffic.
With several developers delaying projects due to
demand slowdown, low risk appetite and rising cost
of funds just about 500 of the 4,421 rooms planned for
2014 will become operational, according to industry
estimates.
With 20 new launches lined up over the next three
years, experts say there is a fear of over-supply in the
market in the short term.
37. An added pressure from an inventory perspective
is due to the fact that numerous residential
apartment developments that have been
introduced in the short term rental market .
They now operate in the same space as
conventional hotels. These are either self-operated
or operated by opportunistic hotel management
companies.
These are rented out on a daily basis at
considerably lower rates, driven by the fact that
they do not have the necessary hotel infrastructure
behind the property or operation.
In the long run, with the help of Marketing and
promotion, Bangalore as a meeting and conference
hub, could help the city’s hospitality sector get
back to good times
40. The Internet has caused massive change in the hotel
industry-new technologies, new competitors and newly-
empowered customers have fundamentally altered the face
of our business.
Complexity- Fifteen years ago it would have been
unthinkable for a hotelier to ask the question "who is my
customer?" The rise of online travel sites, the sheer
availability of information and the ubiquity of technology
have given customers options
Control- As the hotelier, you can control the information
you publish and distribute to most booking channels. And
you have a real opportunity to create great content for those
booking channels.
