The Best Way To Understand Engineered Hardwood Floors

Because engineered hardwood floors are manufactured by cross-laying three to twelve ply
layers and gluing them and pressing them together, they're not the same as solid hardwood
flooring. The planks will often be three to seven inches wide and can be up to three quarters
of an inch in depth. Softwood or hardwood plywood constitute the inner cores, and then a
hardwood veneer, or the wear layer, is fitted on top of them. As with solid hardwood floors,
almost any kind of hardwood may make up the top layer of engineered hardwood floors. The
wood could be oak, birch, maple or a great many other species. In general, engineered
hardwood flooring is more affordable than solid hardwood flooring.

Engineered hardwood floors will be more moisture resistant than solid wood floors, which
means they are more appropriate for use in humid rooms like the bathroom or kitchen.
They're also best for vacation homes, where the humidity as well as the temperature are
usually not controlled for long amounts of time. Provided that the moisture content of the
concrete is low, engineered hardwood floors can also be placed over concrete basement
floors. On the other hand, it might be wise to use a floating floor for a basement. These can
allow the installation of sleepers, a vapor barrier, along with a subfloor over the concrete,
which is why they can be best. Additionally, engineered hardwood flooring may be glued over
a wood subfloor.

The ground may withstand from between 30 to 100 years, depending on the kind of wear
layer. Some varieties of engineered hardwood flooring have such a thin wear layer that they
cannot be sanded or even refinished more often than once and can simply be resealed when
the finish fades away. Floors with a thicker wear layer could be sanded one to five times.

Engineered wood floors are made in one of two ways. In one method, the natural grain of the
wood is brought out and the wear layer is a bit thicker as the wear layer is sawn from the log.
Also, the wood might be taken off of the log with a large knife blade because the layer can be
rotary cut. The grain of wood can be even more ornate compared to a sawn-cut wear layer
when this way is used.

When considering redesigning a property, the width of the planks and the color of the wood is
entirely the homeowner's decision. Narrower planks make a room look a bit more formal.
Dark woods and then dark furnishings make the room look smaller, and pale woods tend to
make the room look larger, on the whole.

Even though the job is fairly labor intensive, engineered hardwood floors are fairly easy to
install by a lay person. The homeowner will need patience, some basic carpentry skills, and
tools like framing squares, tape measures, chalk lines, and also power nailers. The
homeowner would be smart to just block out the entire day for the job although some home
repair books say it only takes about five hours to lay the floor in a typical sized room.
The homeowner can even finish the floor when it is laid by renting equipment like a disc edge
sander and a drum sander. Nonetheless, it may be best to leave it to a expert because
finishing is really a noisy as well as messy job.
