2. Ask for What You Need… Prayer
➷ Jesus’ disciples asks him to teach them how to pray like John taught his people to
pray. Jesus does teach them how to pray.
➷ The author is teaching us to ask God for what you really need, so he can send the
Holy Spirit to guide you. Don’t ask for what you want . You are not suppose to ask
for what you want, but for what you need.
3. The Good Friend…➷ Jesus tells one of his disciples: Suppose your friend, who was traveling, bangs on a
your door for food, and you say no because everyone is sleeping. The man keeps
asking and making noise disturbing the people, so finally you get up and give him
what he wants.
➷ Jesus is teaching them: if you ask more than once, you will receive.
➷ The author is saying Keep on asking, and you will receive. Keep on looking, and you
will find what you are looking for,. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened for
you. Whoever keeps asking will receive, whoever keeps looking will find, and doors
will open to those who keep knocking.
4. Jesus and Beelzebul
➷ Jesus casts out a demon, leading the people to accuse him of deriving his
power from Beelzebul (the prince of demons). He tells the people a story
of a man who despite being fully armored to protect his palace, is
overthrown by another man..
➷ “Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself
will fall.”
➷ “Now if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your followers drive them
out?”
➷ “If I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon
you.”
5. The Sign of Jonah
➷ Jesus is preaching to the people. He tells them to stop searching for signs after all
the ones God have already given them and to make a choice.
➷ Jesus asks them to turn away from sin and repent, like the Ninevites in the story
of Jonah and like the Queen of the South..
➷ In Matthew’s gospel it refers back to judgment day. The Ninevites and the Queen
of the South will rise to judge the guilty.
6. Lamp of the Body…
➷ Starts off as, "No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or
under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, so that those who come in may see
the light."
➷ Refers to God giving us a "religious light" (Chance, a way, privilege) and how we
should not keep it hidden, but use that light properly so that we may go forth and
build a greater relationship with GOD.
➷ Healthy eyes vs. Unhealthy eyes. (Religiously right vs Sinfulness)
➷ Jesus wishes for us to choose a path that can bring us away from sin
and temptation and closer to GOD. The Path of Light…
7. Woes to Pharisees and Lawyers
➴ Jesus had been invited to eat with a Pharisee and accepts
the invitation. When Jesus sits with the Pharisee, he was
surprised at how Christ had not washed his hands before the
meal.
➴ He lists three woes to the Pharisee:
➢ “Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of
your mint”
➢ “Woe to you Pharisees, because you love the most
important seats in the synagogues and respectful
greetings in the marketplaces.”
➢ “Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves.”
8. Woes to Pharisees and Lawyers
➷ The experts of the law( aka Lawyers) state how they
feel insulted because they felt it applied to them..
➷ Jesus then states three woes to the experts of the law:
➢ “ … woe to you, because you load people with
burdens they can hardly carry… “
➢ “Woe to you, because you build tombs for the
prophets, and it was your ancestors who killed
them.”
➢ “Woe to you experts of the law, because you have
taken away the key of knowledge...”

These quotes are Jesus’ response and their explanations
•“Any kingdom…”
If Satan destroys his own, his kingdom will fall. So why would he give Jesus the authority to exorcise?
•”Now if...”
If Jesus, the son of God, drives demons by the power of Beelzebul instead by the power of God, then by what power do the Jewish exorcist drive out demons?
•“If I drive…”
This miracle is a sign of the prophesied rule of the Lord coming to be.
The message in the passage
Jesus says that not siding with him and not selecting a side, is siding with the Devil. Refusing Jesus is like refusing light. Neutrality, after being offered light, is rejection. And if light is rejected, the emptiness left in our soul can be filled with darkness, much like someone being possessed.
•The people have been given the Son of God as a sign who brings God’s word to preach to us in order for us to get to know him better.
•In Matthew’s gospel, the emptiness of the soul lesson is place in this passage instead of the previous one.
[read the quote on top]
God gives us life, and a chance to grow closer to him or float away with greed and selfishness.
We should choose to give off a bright and powerful light( using our light properly so we can grow closer to God.) and not a dim, slightly lit light( that can be filled with corruption, darkness, sin, greed, etc)
Healthy eyes- “light eyes” innocent, good, faithful to god, generous
Unhealthy eyes- full of darkness, sin, “Path” away from God. selfish
AUTHOR USES SYMBOLISM TO SAY THAT WE SHOULD LIVE A LIFE FULL OF “LIGHT” SO THAT WE MAY STAY AWAY FROM ALL THE SIN AND SO THAT WE MAY SHINE AND INFLUENCE OTHERS TO SHINE A PATH TO GOOD.
Matthew and mark's gospel practically say the same thing so theres not much difference.
Christ not washing his hands:
God does not care how clean your body is, its the inside that counts. God only sees your intentions from deep inside, he overlooks our hearts.
You can be squeaky clean on the outside, but rotten on the inside.
The three woes explanation:
First One on slide: Saying how the Pharisees neglect God and only worry about things like tithes. How Pharisees don't show love towards God.
Second One on slide: Saying how instead of loving God, the Pharisees love authority and power in synagogues.
Third One on slide: unmarked graves because of the false things the Pharisees may say, and people don't pay mind to it, or don't notice right away
The Scribes(who were also called the experts of the law and lawyers)felt insulted when Jesus was saying those things to the Pharisees. They work with the Pharisees and are on their side. Pharisees and "lawyers" are the bad guys.
First Woe: They enforce laws on citizens who can barely carry them out because they are harsh but they don't really enforce the laws on themselves. Example: they pass a law to the country, but they themselves do not follow the law or exempt themselves from it
Second Woe: how the Pharisees and experts in the law have killed the prophets and pretend to respect their graves when it was their fault.
Third Woe: the lawyers have been filling the heads of innocent people, seeking for gods grace and seeking a way into heaven, and filling them with false beliefs, hindering(making it difficult) people from wanting to go to heaven.
