2914650-323850Venice’s Fate
A survivor named Robin slowly gets off his bed and turns open his diary to a fresh new page. He writes the date of a disaster that shocked the whole world. The title was “The Fate of Venice”.
1983, after all those reviews on Venice’s beauty and elegance, Robin was determined. Robin bought the most expensive first class ticket there and planned to stay there for 3 days and 2 nights. “Hey! Robin! HERE! HERE!” Henry yelled with excitement. “Jeez, Henry… Calm down…” Robin sighed, exasperated.
“Would you like me to be your guide? I am a qualified guide with 10 years of tour- guide experience, you know.’’ Henry asked.
“Alright… but let me get to my hotel first.” Robin ordered.
Every 3 years, because of the solar activity, there were little floods. Each night, the observatory recorded new floods coming which made the water level rise night after night. *(He doesn’t understand why they aren’t telling the citizens as that could’ve saved them all.)
In the morning, Robin woke up and bellowed: “Henry… HENRY… HENRYYYYY!!! WAKEEEEE UPPPPPPPPP UPPPPPPPPPP!!!” Henry, clearly startled, fell off his bed and landed in a puddle of water. “Why is there a puddle here?” Henry questioned. He repeated the question so many times that Robin got fed up. *(In fact, Robin always thought that guy was so annoying, but too bad, he needed a cheaper air ticket.) Robin reminded himself to just bear with it and said aggregatedly to Henry ‘’I will clean it up. Are you happy now? ”
Robin and Henry visited the world heritage site “Venice and its Lagoon”. Although every ride was about 20 Euros, they thought it worth and so they went on a 2-hour ride around the whole Venice. Near the delta, the water current was increasingly unpredictable. Robin had a sudden sense of foreboding, but kept it to himself. Even so, he decided to get off the gondola at the very famous Horses of Saint Mark. He looked down, and immediately, ear-splitting screams began. Everyone started to get really confused and scattered off in different directions. A massive tidal wave came crashing in. Robin witnessed thousands of people being towed in by the backwash. Emergency shelters were established for the homeless, however, the chaotic situation made people trample over one another in their attempt to reach the harbor or the airport.
All departures of ships were cancelled. The waves got stronger and wilder every second. The ferocious waves swept everyone away as if they were mere specks of dust. Yachts were flipped over and floated into the city suburbs. Henry was lost and Robin ran into the most stable building there, the museum. Once he was safely inside the building, he stood there, frozen and petrified by this crisis. His legs, in particular, were shivering, as if he was in the Arctic Sea. Robin’s legs were rooted to the ground until he remembered he wanted to live, for he wanted to have more time with his family. His eyes closed as he tried to ignore reality, and the predicament he was in.
The waves crashed again and again against the Star Liner. It was about to crash into Campanile Di San Marco located at the coast of the sea. The Star Liner stopped, everyone climbed up abroad because they thought it would be safer if the Star Liner continued to float. The top half of Campanile Di San Marco fell into the sea with a colossal splash. *(Only those who climbed on to Star Liner survived.) We saw helicopters fly to our rescue from far away; however, the air currents it near impossible for them to come any closer.
“Captain you there? Captain, we crashed the Campanile Di San Marco down.” a sailor said.
“I saw a stick fall down from the sky… What’s with that rumble? We are in the middle of the ocean…” the drunken captain laughed. A gigantic whirlpool had formed by then and started sucking everything down to the bottom of the sea, ready to become part of the sea bed.
“You got drunk! No wonder we are went in wrong direction!” the sailor exclaimed. “And now lives have been lost, due to your mistake!” The sailor was clearly exasperated at the captain’s carelessness. The whole Star Liner scenario was recorded and broadcasted around the world. The airport’s serene atmosphere had turned around in an instant. It was turmoil. People fell into the sea, heavily injured. One by one, they became part of the sea. Dead bodies floated on the surface of the water. Not everyone in the airport manage to escape, because many drowned in the tumultuous waters.
On board the Star Liner, Robin took photos of this disaster and stuck it into his diary to record this historical moment. The passengers found food and water supplies and stuffed themselves with it, for they were extremely hungry and exhausted. Luckily there was a helicopter which saved Robin and many others. Robin was brought home with only a few minor injuries. All survivors were receiving counseling in case they had suffered from symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder.
Two weeks later, the flood ended and dead bodies were strewn all over the ground. He revisited Venice to find Henry’s body. Although he didn’t appear to be externally injured, he was heavily injured internally by the tremors of the water. Robin felt very sorrowful for high death tolls and also sufferings of family members of the deceased.
The survivor ended his diary entry and closed his eyes trying to hold the tears for the loss of his dear friend.
