A grain of sand begins its journey in a river where it is eroded from rocks and sediments. It is carried by water downstream and tumbles along the riverbed being shaped and smoothed by the motion of water and collisions with other grains. Eventually, the sand grain may be deposited on a beach after traveling hundreds of miles within the river system over thousands of years.
