3. In any type of cancer, “metastatic” describes disease that
has spread to other areas of the body. In the case of
breast cancer, metastasis most commonly occurs in the
lungs, liver, bone, skin, brain, and lymph nodes in areas
other than the armpit. Metastatic breast cancer can be
identified in a patient who has been fighting the disease
for a period of time and in patients who have previously
gone undiagnosed. In the case of a previously
undiagnosed patient, the condition is known as
“metastatic at presentation.” This means that the cancer,
while beginning in the breast, produced no signs prior to
spreading. In this case, the cancer is automatically
considered to be advanced in stage.
