1. Reading Prompt Descriptions
Purpose Formal writing is guided by some purpose, goal, or aim.
Inform – using facts to inform, explain, educate and enlighten.
Entertain – using fiction and non-fiction to entertain, narrate,
describe or shock.
Persuade – using a combination of facts and opinions to persuade,
argue, condemn or ridicule.
Audience Essays and other forms of writing are actually written to someone. Sometimes the
audience is a generalized group of readers. Keeping your audience in mind while
you write can help you make good decisions about what material to include, in
what order to organize your ideas, and how best to support your argument.
Tone Tone is the author’s attitude and feelings about the audience and the subject
matter. If the subject is politics, the author may choose to write using a formal
tone or a sarcastic tone, depending on how the author feels about the topic and
what the author is trying to convey in his or her writing. Depending on whether
the author wants to sound formal or sarcastic will in turn determine the actual
words used in the piece and how the author chooses to put those words together.
Vocabulary Select at least (3)terms that you are not familiar with in your reading. List
them and study their definitions. Also notice and pay attention to the
author’s use of the term in an effort in add new terms to your vocabulary.
