Process of Getting Bait
1. The method of Bait is as follows:
The Saint will order the Truth Seeker to offer two raq-aat non- compulsory
prayer. After this the Talib should put his forehead on the ground and
repent before Allah (swt) for his misdeeds, sins and faults and promis to
refrain from such deeds in future. Now he should sit before his Murshid
(Saint) respectfully and recite “Aamantu Billah he” and say its translation in
his mother tongue loudly like this:
“I believe in Allah (swt) in His Angels, in His books, in His Prophets, in the
Day of Judgment and in the fact that all the values and estimates of good
and evil are from Allah (swt), and in Ressuruction. I would be punisished or
rewarded for the actions done by me in this world. Now he should put his
hands in the the hands of the Saint and say” I make you a witness to my
pledge with Allah (swt) that I shall refrain from commiting the great sins in
future and try to avoid the small ones. I shall always be neat and clean. I
shall say the prayers properly, keep fasts (in the month of Ramzan), if I own
money I shall give Zakat (compulsory charity Rs 2.5 %), I shall go for pilgrim
(at Macca) and if need arises I shall fight in the way of Allah (swt), I shall
obey the orders nad instructions of your system and obey you
unconditionally. For all these things I need your help, considering the Allah
(swt) Almighty as Omnipresent, I pledge to follow you.
The Saint will say, “I accept your pledge for Allah (swt) and pray to Him that
you may succeed and remain firm in your faith. Aameen”. Now the Murshid
should take some water in a glass and after drinking some drought out of it,
give it to the Talib along with his spiritual attention. If there happens be any
sweets there, he should distribute among the present persons but it
doesn’t matters if he has not any sweets for distribution. He has got the
Bait Namah dully printed for this purpose. Every follower will be given two
copies of it and he will be required to return one copy after signing it for
record and keep the other copy with him. He should study of it off and on,
so that he learns the fact by heart for which he becomes a follower. A
specimen of Bait Namah is given at the end of the book.
2. Many persons objected on the last sentence of the Bait Namah. The
sentence is I shall obey all your orders unconditionally. The critics’ should
know that this vow is meant to maintain discipline. No community or
section can remain intact without discipline. Secondly as Tasawwuf and
Suluk are about the state and qualities of mysteries and these cannot be
explained verbally and in writing, the followers tease the Saint by putting
various questions, so the Saint has only one course open to him and that is
to stop them from putting any questions go on doing what they have been
ordered to do silently.
Now what is needed after Bait is the following:
1- Obedience: After Bait a new leaf is turned over in the life of the
disciple. He surely takes, new birth and becomes a new man if he is a
faithful truth seeker. He can succeed in his new life only when he obeys
his Saint totally and carries out his orders unconditionally. The more he
is sincere in obeying the Saint, the more will he succeed and gain high
degree of knowledge. So after Bait he should practice obedience of his
Shaikh(Saint).
2- Love: The second item after obedience is the love for the Shaikh. Every
follower should try to increase it to such extent that he should love his
Shaikh more than anybody except the Allah (swt) and His Prophet. The
proof of this love is the spirit of obedience in the disciple. The man who
claims the love of his Shaikh but does not carry out his orders , is a liar.
He has no love for his Shaikh but deceives himself only.
3- Constancy: The third item is constancy and steadfastness. It consist of
two things first, that you should go and acting on the direction and
advice of the Shaikh steadily. If the desired results are not achieves even
after a period of time, You should not loose heart but continue the
process. The fact is that the rapid spiritual progress or delayed one is not
in the hands of the Shaikh . It depends on the grace of Allah (swt). So if
the spiritual advance does not show up at an early stage, one should
neither be worried nor disappointed at all.
