INTRODUCTION
In the first post we discussed how to recognize cancer in your pet, and we make no apology for
starting on a sad note. Unfortunately, many dogs do sufferfrom cancer in old age and we hope this
article will help to shed some light on a subject seldom aired in the dog owning community.
From a very serious topic we move to one which on the surface
is no more than an irritating one about how dogs get ticks and
how to keep a dog tick-free. We do recommend that you read
this as it, along with the third article “why you need to use
flea treatment regularly”, suggests a natural remedy which our
readers may want to try, and iot also gives guidance on lyme
desease, which is a very serious matter for your pet if it
contracts it.
A dogs eyes and ears are admittedly probably second to a dogs
ability to smell, but they emain hugely important to them to
live an active life. That’s why we think that our articles on
caring for your dog's eyes, and dog ear health, and how to
keep a dog's ears free from parasitic infection, should be ones
for our readers to take an active interest in.
Next, we tackle the subject of health and safety and the
importance of preventing dog accidents. But, as we accept
that occasionally accidents will still happen, so the article also
includes the first thing you do for a dog that has been injured.
Next comes a subject which has to be included as it may assis some readers, we hope that is not you
who needs to know about ”blood in a dog's stool”.
Of course, the next topic is one with which all responsible dog owners soon become familiar after
they start dog keeping, and that is the subject of being aware of your dog's health and how to spot
early indications of illness.
4 IPPTS Dog Health eBooks: Part 1
From that it seemed appropriate to move on to the subject of dog ear yeast infections with an
article, which includes natural home remedies for dog yeast infections.
Telling infections from allergies can be difficult so we followed on to our next article on
identification of dog allergies and what to do if you find your dog has an allergy.
As the human population becomes increasingly overweigh so does the dog population, so we decided
to include our next article about canine diabetes and how to prevent it.
Continuing the discussion on prevention and avoidance of ill-health in dogs, rather than cures, we
make a plea in the next article for the importance of dog vaccination.
And, for our next article, still on the idea of prevention, we give useful tips about getting your dog
to swallow a pill.
Something which a dog will almost always be as reluctant to let the owner do, as getting tem to
take a pill, is allowing their ears to be cleaned So, we hope our readers will find the next article on
how to clean your dog's ears to be useful.
It’s back to the subject of ticks again, in the next article, and this time we are in Australia for our
article on how to help protect your pets from their deadly local “paralysis ticks”.
As we have manetioned previosuly, we are all always keen to help prevent accidents if we can and
that’s why we included the following article which is all about why you should avoid playing with
sticks, and avoid injury by “playing it safe” with your canine.
Another article which is not pleasant to think about, but needed to be included to help the dog
owners who see this problem in their pets, follows with tips on avoiding urinary tract infections in
their dogs.
Three articles from the end, and we give our readers more details on how to spot cancer in dogs.
The penultimate article covers an important piece of information on how to treat cataracts in dogs,
with a positive recommendation on a product to check out.
Finally, we return to canine incontinence with an article on how to help in curing your dog of
incontinence.
We suggest that now that you know what this eBook has to offer, you dive in, start reading, and
get the most from this publication!

HOW TO RECOGNIZE CANCER IN YOUR PET
Cancer is a type of malignant tumor or
growths that invade the surrounding tissues
and use the bloodstream to move spread to
other parts of the body.
Signs that the family pet might have cancer
are abnormal swellings that continue to grow,
sores are a few heel, bleeding or other
discharge from body openings, the pet is
having a difficult time eating and swallowing,
persistent lameness, difficulty breathing,
painful urination, chronic coughing, weight
loss, fevers, lack of appetite, and stamina.
If you notice your pet experience the any individual or combination of the symptoms you should
consult your local veterinarian.
Unfortunately, some cancers reappear even after removal of the offending tumor.
Cancer can re-appear unless the tumor is removed and any remaining cancer cells properly treated.
Because of improvements in veterinary care at nutritional needs family pets are living longer. As a
direct result of the longer life span of family pets wore more cases of cancer are being seen.
In the not so distant past cancer and pets was a virtual kiss of death. In today's medically advanced
world of veterinary medicine your pets outcome is more positive. Early detection followed by timely
intervention is the most positive here for your pet's cancer.
In some cases simple removal on the tumor is all that is required to other may any cancer cells. Some
types of cancer require or surgery. The surgery has an excellent success rate with cancers that were
detected early on.
If your pet has a tumor that is inoperable your veterinarian might suggest radiation, chemical, or
biological therapy.
Radiation therapy exposes the malignant cells to high level of radiation with the hope that the radiation
will kill the cancer cells.
Chemical therapy is medication design to kill the cancer cells. In particularly aggressive forms of
cancer chemical and radiation therapy is used jointly.
Other forms of therapies used to treat and comfort your pet when they are diagnosed with cancer are
grooming, nutritional support, Soft bedding, pain management, ulcer prevention, and physical therapy.
If your pet is diagnosed with cancer discuss the options which are available, with the veterinarian.
Next, if you have pet insurance. call your pet health care insurance representative to find out what can
be done to extend life of your pet.

HOW DOGS GET TICKS AND KEEPING A DOG TICK-FREE
Dogs and in general all pets tend to spend more time outdoors in summer. With dogs it is very
important to be careful about bugs, parasites and micro organisms that can harm them while they get
their whiff of fresh air.
Precautions are necessary to keep these
dangers away. One of these pests that can
cause a lot of nuisance and damage are the
ticks since they carry diseases. Avoiding the
ticks is of prime importance. It’s better than
curing at a later stage.
Ticks tend to stick to warmer temperatures,
and are attracted when they detect raised
Carbon Dioxide, and movement.
Ticks do not transmit through the air. Their
motion is limited to crawling. They transmit
themselves by climbing up taller structures or
plants and drop onto any living and moving
human or animal.
The danger of diseases or kinds of diseases
transmitted by ticks can be substantial but it
very much depends upon the country and culture in which you live, therefore the cure of after effects
of ticks and ticks itself varies from country to country.
The danger of having ticks on your dogs body sets in once the tick bites. The bite itself is painless and
unfeeling but the place of bite might get infected in no time. Consulting a veterinarian is advisable for
treatment which normally involves oral antibiotics.
If your pet dog is diseased due to a tick bite, there is a risk of infection spreading due to your dog
salivation on or biting another pet. The most popular disease spread by a tick bite is the lyme disease
but not the only one.
The best way to avoid ticks is to avoid walking your dog in the midst of vegetation during tick season.
Always keep the vegetation around your house trimmed. Certain preventive medication products are
also available. More information can be gathered from your veterinarian about suitability of these to
your dog in respect to age and area.
Do not use medications without consulting and proper instructions must be followed in using this kind
of medication. Please remember that these medications are suited for a single class of pets only,
meaning that tick prevention medication for dogs is for dogs only and should not be used on cats or
any other pets.
When your dog comes back from outdoors be sure to check him thoroughly for ticks. They are
normally found in warm areas, under the arms, in the ears, between the toes and in the folds of the
skin.
If you find any, remove them safely. Do not touch the tick, use a alcohol swab, then pull it up slowly
with tweezers. Make sure not to leave any parts of the tick sticking to your dog. If you are
unsuccessful contact your vet.

WHY YOU NEED TO USE FLEA TREATMENT REGULARLY ON YOUR DOG AND OTHER PETS
Fleas can be a large problem when it comes to your pets and home, fleas make everyone itch and
scratch. But it also gives dogs rashes in some cases.
House pets are not the only ones effected by
the menace of fleas, strays are also infected.
However you can at least treat your house to
prevent them from being in your home,
causing everyone and all animals that live
there annoyance and bites.
There are ways to prevent fleas from coming
in, and there are also Flea Treatments that kill
fleas. A good flea treatment to get for animals
is Frontline. Frontline kills ninety-eight to one
hundred percent of fleas.
How fast does this work? Frontline kills fleas within 24 hours of application. After application the
treatment is good for one month. Best of all it is also waterproof for thirty days. Frontline is also gentle
and can be used on puppies and kittens at least 8 weeks old. Treatment works so well because of
Frontline’s special formula that is designed to not only kill the adult fleas but also the young ones and
eggs.
Coming in 4 sizes for dogs based on weight, and 1 dose for cats. Frontline comes in three packs or six
packs depending on what you prefer. Using Frontline is easy, all you have to do is cut the top of the
container with a pair of scissors, then open the applicator, and apply between the shoulder blades on
the skin under all the hair.
There are three brands of Frontline to consider. Spray; Which can be applied for sever flea or tick
infestation, multi-pet house, for quick treatment. Top Spot; For owners who want long lasting action
and owners who want typical application. Plus; This brand carries an additional ingredient (S)-
methoprene this is the chemical used to kill the eggs and young fleas not just the adults.
Frontline kills fleas and ticks when they come in contact with the pet who was treated. There are many
forms of flea treatment out there on the market. However not all of them work very well, and your
veterinarian might know which brand can or will work best for your animal.
Thoroughly cleaning the places around where your pets go helps reduce Flea infestation. This
includes your home, it is suggested that you vacuum your carpets and furniture at least twice a week
to help in prevention.
There are also chemical treatments available that can help with the outdoors however they can be
toxic to your animals and kids so you might want to be careful before application.
Collar applicators can also be purchased however these can be sometimes ineffective since they only
work on the animal and can be toxic if the animal or another chews on them.
You can also boost your animals immune system as bad as it sounds. Mowing your grass outside and
in your ditches also gets rid of some of the potential homes of fleas.
Fleas like areas that are near where animals normally travel, be it in the woods, out in the park, or in
the backyard. Recognizing these places helps in prevention.

NATURAL WAYS TO REDUCE FLEA PROBLEMS
If you are more worried about the effects these products can
have on your animals and potentially your children there are
also natural ways to get rid of fleas, however you might want to
look them up and decide if they are right for you, some of the
natural ways can also have bad effects depending on which you
choose.
One of the natural deterrents used is natural garlic not
purchased in packages but rather bought fresh. This method is
rumored to make the blood of your pet unappealing to fleas.
There are no scientific studies to prove this however given
garlic’s healing properties it is worth a shot if you want to try. If
you choose this method only use a few small slivers in a meal
for the cat or dog. Depending on the size of the animal the
proportion of garlic may need to be more or less.

CARING FOR YOUR DOG’S EYES
Your dog's eyes can often be regarded as the windows to his health. Problems with a dog’s eyes
might point to other issues, like vascular disease affecting the blood and the blood circulation system.
DOG EYE HEALTH PROBLEMS THAT CAN SIGNAL VASCULAR DISORDERS
Bleeding Blood Vessels: Does your dog have blood coming out
of the blood vessels in the eyeball? That's a complaint known as
intraocular hemorrhage, and it's a condition that may mean your
pet has a circulatory condition.
You should also know that a diagnosis of retinal detachment,
where the retina separates from the choroid, can lead to a
diagnosis of vascular disease.
Lastly, if your pet suffers from papilledema, a swollen blind spot
that's caused by excessive fluid build-up, that condition may
also be indicative of a vascular condition in your pet dog.
WHEN TO CONSULT YOUR VET
If your pet has any of these dog eye health disorders, you
should arrange an appointment with your vet to have your dog
checked over to see if he has a disorder that interferes with his
blood circulation.
If your pet has already been diagnosed with one of these dog eye health conditions, be sure to follow
your veterinarian's instructions and give your pet any prescribed medicine or treatment for the
disorder.
DOG EYE HEALTH PROBLEMS THAT CAN SIGNAL INFECTIOUS DISORDERS
Watch out for inflammation, or redness, around the tissue that surrounds your dog's eye. This health
condition, known as conjunctivitis, may mean your pet has a virus, a bacterial disease, parasites, or
allergies.
Conjunctivitis: is considered one of the most common conditions diagnosed today, and it is usually
easily treated by keeping the dog's eyes in good health, keeping them clean, and giving medicine for a
short while to eliminate the cause of the infection.
If your pet has conjunctivitis, his eyes will itch. Try to stop him from scratching his eyes while you are
treating his eye health problems. Get a cone-shaped collar from your vet if need be, so your pet's
conjunctive eye tissue health infection will have a chance to heal.
KNOW YOUR BREED
Some breeds are prone to have more dog eye health problems than other dogs, so it is important to
be familiar with any dog eye health problems particular to your dog's breed.
German Shepherd breeds, for instance, are susceptible to chronic superficial keratitis, and some toy
breeds can experience eye problems if their hair is not kept out of their eyes.

DOG EAR HEALTH AND HOW TO KEEP A DOG’S EARS FREE FROM PARASITIC INFECTION
Everyone knows how good a dog’s sense of
smell is, but not so many owners would be
aware that a dog’s hearing is equally good
and important to its well being, and in fact is
essential for his health.
A dog that has issues with hearing will be
severely robbed of being able to ascertain
sounds which will make the dog feel less than
happy. So, it is important for you to recognize
that you need to pay close attention to dog
ear health to ensure that he stays perky as
well as healthy, and of course, happy.
DEAFNESS MIGHT BE A SIGN OF OTHER HEALTH PROBLEMS
If you note your dog’s ear health starting to decline such as his becoming deaf you should immediately
have him checked by a veterinarian as it may actually be an indication of some other illness or even
infection.
In order to ensure your dog’s ear health, you should have him regularly checked by a vet and such
check-ups should also form a part of his routine upkeep, and some parts on your dog’s anatomy that
merit being checked regularly include where places that have cuts, sores as well as abscesses and
even infectious parts.
While checking your dog ear health, you need to look very closely at his ear canal and this you can do
by drawing his ears back and also up so that his eardrum becomes easily visible. Signs of poor health
in his ear canal are when the canal seems to be wet or are slightly inflamed and if this is seen, then
you should take your pet to the vet for a check-up.
Another factor in ear health is the possibility of mite infestation which is known to occur under normal
circumstances, but especially when ear wax is allowed to build up in your pet’s ears because such
earwax is ideal feeding ground for mites which will then result in bacterial infections as well as
inflammation in the ear canal.
However, by treating the ears with antibiotic, you should not have any problem in getting rid of the
mites though the treatment may have to be administered for about three weeks which is plenty of time
to rid the dog of all of the mites at their various stages of development.
Also, to ensure proper dog ear health, you must also clean his ears gently with warm water that also
contains an ear wash solution and to also ensure that you remove all moistness from the ears after the
wash as a damp dog’s ear can encourage bacterial growth.
If you follow these simple steps in ensuring proper care for your dogs’ ears, you can at least ensure
that many such common dog ear health problems do not crop up, and thus you will have protected
your pet’s hearing which is so vital to his well being.

PREVENTING DOG ACCIDENTS AND THE FIRST THING YOU DO FOR A DOG THAT HAS BEEN
INJURED
Though it is an unpleasant thought, it is quite
possible that in the lifetime of your dog he or
she will get hurt.
Hopefully, usually it will not be a debilitating
injury and will be one they recover from
quickly.
The best way to insure your dog doesn't get
injured is to train your dog. Obedience is the
key here. If your dog goes into the street they
could get hit by a car. So to avoid that, you
want to train your dog to obey words like
"stay", or "sit". Other possibilities of injury are
dog fights.
Training won't insure that your dog never gets hurt, but should make the chances of it happening far
less likely.
So if your dog does get hurt, what do you do? The first thing you need to do is assess the situation. If
you are around at the time of incident, then you will immediately know what just happened. If not, then
you will get a good indication when you examine your dog.
If your dog is unable to walk or won't come to you then you know there is a very good chance there
are broken bones. Make sure to carefully look them over. The worst possibility is that there is a spine
injury.
The next step is to get them to a safe place. If they can't move, then to keep them from greater injury it
is good to get a coat or something flat under them. Then you can either drag them away, or if possible,
carry them to safety.
If they are bleeding a lot, then try to find some cloth to wrap around the wound to stop bleeding. You
might have to tear or cut off a piece of your shirt if this is the case, or use your coat if you have one.
Another thing you can do is use their collar to help stop bleeding if there is nothing else. Just tighten it
up as best you can.
Some kinds of collars won't work though. It will be hard, but one of the best things you can do is to
reassure your dog by using a calm voice.
Just keep speaking to them. If you and your dog have had time to bond, then your dog should already
see you as security and comfort. It won't help much, but it will help.
Of course the next thing to do is to get them to the vet quickly. Even if the injury isn't severe, it is good
to take them anyways.
13 IPPTS Dog Health eBooks: Part 1
BLOOD IN A DOG’S STOOL IS USUALLY CAUSED BY MELENA
The number one cause of blood in dog stool is Melena, which
along with hematochezia is the main reason why your dog will
show blood in his stool.
Melena itself is the blood digested by dogs and it is of a dark
color while hematochezia is like fresh blood found in a dog’s
stool and is not as serious an issue as Melena.
Even though the reasons for blood in a dog’s stool are many,
they can be identified after testing carried out by a veterinarian.
The main effect of blood in the stool is that your pet will
generally show signs of having poor energy and may often also
suffer from incontinence. Accidents can happen as the dog is
not capable of getting outdoors quickly.
To prevent this condition, you may need to restrict how much
food the dog is allowed to eat which will have the effect of
stopping his diarrhea and eventually also allows the intestines to
heal.
However, when the problem is due to infections or even because of bacterial parasites, the condition
will continue till treated with medications or other medical means.
Dog blood in stool is a problem that may affect any dog no matter what its breed or size and can occur
even despite your best endeavors to prevent it.
Common causes for the problem may include medications and infections as well as cancer and
presence of foreign objects in the intestines of the dog, and even metabolic disorders or hemorrhaging
gastro enteritis are other causes for blood in stool.
Also, you need to be extra careful should blood in stool also show other signs such as paleness of
gums, excessive thirst, frequent bouts of urination, loss of appetite or loss of weight.
As a first line of defense, you may try giving your dog a bland diet that consists of rice as well as
potatoes and substitute these foods for its regular food.
However, if this does not work, then you need to take your pet to a vet who can then diagnose why
blood in stool is occurring and then suggest suitable treatment options.
Some of the tests that might need to be carried out for blood in stool include urinalysis, biochemical
work up as well as blood work up and diagnosing sample stool as well as conducting ultrasound and
even having the dog’s chest and abdomen X-rayed.
Hopefully, blood in stool condition may turn out to be less than severe and if that is the case, you can
simply treat him at home by giving him a special diet, though in more serious cases, you may need to
medicate him in order to prevent stomach acids and to also coat his intestines.
And if even this does prevent dog health blood in stool, you need to have the vet make more
investigations to pinpoint the exact causes and suggest suitable treatments.

BEING AWARE OF YOUR DOG’S HEALTH AND EARLY INDICATIONS OF ILLNESS
Dog health can easily be taken care of by instilling good habits
in the pet and training him well.
A healthy dog is a happy pet having a positive attitude and
personality.
puppy potty training tips
You must ensure food habits are regular and diet is well
balanced. And make sure you give him exercise on a daily basis
and give him the attention and love that he needs, and he will be
a healthy dog.
Let us look at good dog health and symptoms:
 All healthy dogs should have clear, bright eyes and a glossy,
full coat.
 The skin should be clear and an important sign of a healthy
dog is a dry nose, which is free from discharge.
 He should have lots of energy and a good appetite.
 All movements should be natural and free from pain.
Good dog care encourages the dog to have a good and correct weight, based on the breed standards.
Pet owners should be aware that puppies are born with some immunity, but with time the immunity
diminishes greatly. Therefore, vaccinations are vital.
Some diseases can be inherited and it is often not possible to detect them till the dog is at least 18
months old.
Viral infections are frequent among dogs and vaccination can prevent many of these infections. Some
infections are parvo, adenovirus, corona, rabies and distemper. But all diseases and illnesses cannot
be prevented by simply vaccinating the dog.
Therefore the pet must be monitored carefully in order to identify any issues as quickly as possible.
The best person to know and recognize any health issuesis the dog-owner. He sees the dog daily; he
knows the quality and quantity of food that the dog consumes, the exercise that is done by the dog
and the rest taken by him. It is vital, that the owner is aware of the Dog Health and Symptoms.
So if there is anything unusual about the dog on a certain day, it should act as a warning sign of
possible illness. It might merely be listlessness, or loss of appetite or biting, and these signs should be
taken seriously by the owners and the root cause of the problem should be determined.
The early indications of illness can easily be identified if you are familiar with the Dog Health and
Symptoms. The change could be behavioral or physical.
On the physical side, the dog could be drinking an increased amount of water, whereas on the
behavioral aspect, there could be a sudden change in the attitude and personality of the pet.
All dog-owners should inform themselves about the normal working health of the dog. Then it
becomes easier to judge disease symptoms, and when they occur, they should make sure that know
the basics of how to care for a sick dog when they take ownership.

DOG EAR YEAST INFECTIONS
NATURAL HOME REMEDIES FOR DOG YEAST INFECTIONS
The first things that hit me about keeping
dogs was the sheer terror when something
goes wrong not to mention the huge cost.
Though you hope your dog understands your
every word there’s not a lot of help that we
can provide in times of illness other than
comfort.
Both my dogs, as I think most dogs have,
suffered from awful dog yeast infections of the
ear. It cost the dogs a lot of pain and
discomfort and it cost me a lot of time and
money. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to
spend whatever is necessary for my dogs but when you see the terror in their faces when they go to
the vets, it's real easy to question it!
Yeast Infection Dog
I decided to look for natural and holistic cures after one of my dogs got rather through the antibiotics
prescribed to him. To cut a long story short I did a lot of research, befriended a vet and asked him
what he thought about the mass of information I’d found.
Well to say my eyes were opened was an understatement.
The very dog yeast ear drops I was sold by my vet could be made in my kitchen and there were a
whole bunch of home remedies he recommended that are natural and far more effective than
antibiotics – not to mention far less damaging to our pets health.
All Natural Home Remedies
To this day both my dogs have gone from 4-5 dog yeast infections a year each to no times in the last
two years that I’ve had to take my dogs to the vets for anything to do with their ears. My methods also
show you what to do when they DON'T have a yeast infection to prevent it coming on in the first place.
What I’ve discovered isn’t just one method I’ve found for dog yeast infections either. I have spent a lot
of time researching and interviewing qualified experts to reveal all kinds of new techniques.
The main thing is that for all this time neither of my pets has had a dog yeast infection and it has
spared them many trips to dog hell!.
Your dog may not mind a trip to the vets, I see them in the waiting room, the calm ones. But when they
don’t like it…Life gets pretty tough, especially with two of them!
Vet approved and recommended
That aside you can imagine the stress the the entire thing must cause for the dog. In pain, bundled
into the car, driven to the dog equivalent of hell! And for what? To get back in that car again! My two
really do suffer in the car, badly. The fact that I’ve eliminated (so far) any dog yeast infections, has
saved them a lot of pain and a lot of stress. It’s done the same for me to!

IDNTIFICATION OF DOG ALLERGIES AND WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND YOUR DOG HAS AN
ALLERGY
If you are one of the many allergy sufferers
you know who miserable it can make you.
Now imagine your dog suffering from allergies
and how miserable she must be. She cannot
complain and she cannot ask for help. So as
responsible dog owners it is up to us to figure
out when she is having an allergy outbreak
and to provide her with medicine as soon as
possible.
Similar to humans, dog allergies are usually
passed through genetics from parents to
puppies.
There are various things that can cause a dog to have an allergic reaction. The more common dog
allergies include dog food allergies, protein allergies, allergies to pollen, and dog skin allergies.
Thankfully they are all treatable with proper treatment and monitoring. Change her dog food until you
find one that does not trigger a dog food allergy. You should be able to find other treatments for other
types of allergies.
If you believe your dog has allergies then schedule a vet appointment. You vet can examine her and
then recommend the best course of treatment.
The easiest way to identify dog allergies is to know your dog. Know what “normal” looks like for her.
So, when you see something that seems to be out of the ordinary you can take a closer look. This can
be helpful not only in identifying potential allergies, but it can help to identify the start of other illnesses
as well.
Several symptoms can indicate that your dog may be allergic to something. You may notice that she is
always scratching, or she may be gnawing at her skin. There is no sure set of symptoms that you can
use to identify your dog’s allergies since there is no telling how a dog will exactly react to something.
So any changes in behavior that you see is grounds for further investigation. Try to find out what is
causing the change in your dog’s behavior.
Dog allergies should be identified and treated as soon as you can. This can help you poor little dog to
avoid additional pain and discomfort and bring her some relief to her allergy suffering.
If you got your dog from a breeder then it is quite likely that they can tell you if her parents had dog
allergies too. That may make it a bit easier to pinpoint what she may be allergic to.

CANINE DIABETES – HOW TO PREVENT IT
Diabetes
There are essentially 3 ways that you can
help prevent your dog from getting diabetes.
This illness is one that you want to avoid so
that the dog lives as long and healthy as
possible. And although it's rare, there are
many dogs whose diabetes go into remission
just by having their diet, supplementation, and
exercise all in good order.
1. Lower the carbohydrates. Most dog foods
sold in pet shops can have close to 98%
carbs. By minimizing the amount of
carbohydrates in your dog's daily meals, this
decreased carb level can go a long way
towards diabetes prevention.
The diet is very critical for dogs that are genetically at risk for canine diabetes. It is crucial that you
study up on your dog breed and make sure that he is getting the right nutrients so that the gene which
can store diabetes will not be triggered off.
Golden retrievers are among the most popular pets that dog owners have in the United States.
Unfortunately, many of these retrievers get diabetes because their owners did not do enough research
for their breed type in order to get their diet correct from puppy hood.
2. Find the best vet in your city. Discuss with the vet natural options. a lot of dog owners miss this very
crucial dog diabetes prevention step. taking with organic products such as antioxidants and herbs for
the immune system can make a big impact on preventing diabetes, especially for the dog breeds
which are genetically at risk for this disease.
3. Physical exercise! It is very sad to see so many dogs out there who develop canine diabetes that
should never have in the first place had they been active and not become overweight. This of course
is the direct responsibility of you, the dog owner.
If your dog is inactive and gains weight, he can develop diabetes even if he is not a breed that is
genetically at risk.
30 minutes of fast walking two to three times daily is all your dog needs for perfect health and to keep
him in good shape.
If you can go jogging with your dog then that is even better. Having your dog swim is also a great
option for exercise.

IMPORTANCE OF DOG VACCINATION
Dogs are meant to be the most faithful animal on this universe. They are treated as the best buddies.
So their care and health is our responsibility. Dog vaccination is one of the ways.
Dogs have a natural immunity system also
which they get from their mothers in milk, but
it is not enough for them. As soon as they get
older they loose their immunity so they need
to be vaccinated.
TYPES OF VACCINATIONS:
1.Most dogs are vaccinated for Lyme disease
if the disease is prevalent in their area.
Lyme disease is very prevalent in warmer climates and areas where it is warm and humid.
Your pup should be vaccinated for this disease if you plan on doing any type of traveling with your pet.
It will cause severe arthritis and lethargy in your dog and can recur once your pet has been infected. It
is not a fatal disease and usually can be treated with antibiotics.
2. RABIES DOG VACCINATIONS
This vaccine works to stimulate the immune system in other to fight against the virus if the dog is
exposed to such a virus. The dead rabies virus is given as a vaccination and the body considers it a
foreign body, thus building antibodies to fight against it. If the dog receives a bite from an infected
anima with the virus, the body now has enough antibodies to fight the virus, therefore your faithful
companion does not fall victim to a fatal virus.
3. DISTEMPER DOG VACCINATIONS
Distemper is a viral infection that affects the immune system and can lead to serious complications if
not death. This disease is contracted from contact with the excretions of an infected dog.
Airborne particles can also contribute to infecting other dogs. Dogs rarely survive, but when they do,
they suffer from muscle spasms and convulsions.
The symptoms of a fever are a temperature of over 104 degrees, depression, pus in the eyes,
convulsions, diarrhea and vomiting.
If you see these signs, you need to contact your vet immediately. Proper vaccination of your dog
prevents this viral disease from taking the life or livelihood of your companion.
4. PARVOVIRUS DOG VACCINATIONS
Puppies under six months of age succumb to this particular disease. The intestinal tract, lymphoid
tissue, immune system and the bone marrow are affected. Symptoms may be vomiting, convulsion
weight loss and dehydration with coughing. For some puppies, death is immediate. Puppies need
proper medical attention and proper vaccinations to prevent such an untimely demise.
5. LEPTOSPIROSIS
19 IPPTS Dog Health eBooks: Part 1
This is given with other vaccines. It is not a very common or large disease but still harmful and is found
among big and large dogs. It affects liver and kidney.
There have been many debates on the topic that whether
dogs should be vaccinated or not?
The only answer to this question is consulting a vet. No
other person in this world can give you the perfect
knowledge of this. You need to be sure on this point after
all it is about your best buddy.

USEFUL TIPS ABOUT GETTING YOUR DOG TO SWALLOW A PILL
Today, canines have become like another child. We dress them,
buy beds for them and worry about there health.
That is why a dog’s health should definitely be the top priority.
There are many vitamins for promoting health and a vast range
of medicines to heal.
In our modern times we now have drugs to stop infections, get
rid of parasites, dog pneumonia, and many other problems that
may occur.
However there are not very many canine that are available in
tasty tablets like many vitamins on the market. Most of the
medicines are bad tasting and our dog companions usually try
to run and hide when they see the capsules coming their way.
There are many tricks to give medication you might try if you
have trouble giving your pooch their daily vitamin or medicine.
The first way is to go to your dog and give him a tasty treat
without a pill. It should be something strong tasting such as peanut butter or soft cheese on a dog
biscuit.
Then instantly give him the pill covered in the same tasty thing. This helps to get a good flavor in their
mouth first and then hopefully they will be excited and just eat the whole thing. They also make
convenient pill packets in various flavors that dogs love that are less messy.
The next way is for the more sly pooches; the ones who hide the pill in their mouth until you are not
looking and then just spit it out on the floor.
This strategy unfortunately is a little more hands on but with your kind voice and soft hand you can
make the experience a pleasant one. Remember to always go to your dog first. Never call their name.
They might associate that with pill time and be fearful. First have your dog sit (reassure him) then
gently take one hand and open their mouth. With the other hand place the pill as far back in the throat
as possible keeping the head tilted up.
Gently pet their throat as this will cause them to swallow the pill. Then instantly praise your dog with
verbal praise and maybe his most favorite delicious treat after they swallow the pill. This will create a
positive experience for your canine and hopefully they will remember the tasty treat next time.
The real truth is that our dogs don’t live nearly as long as we do. So as dog owners we try to make
their lives as comfortable as we can.
Not only is it not fun to have to take a unhealthy dog to the vet for a vet bill, it is not fun to see your
pooch sick. So by bringing positive association into the pill taking process, you should be able to give
any pills that they might need to take in the future. We love our dogs and always try to do what is right
for them. After all, if we care for our best friends right they will be healthy and happy and live a long
life.
Along with helpful dog tips, you can find many great pet gifts for your canine at blingblingpuppy our
online store.

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR DOG'S EARS
Some dogs will let you do what you will for
them without a fight and some would rather
gnaw off the hand that feeds them than sit still
for a simple ear cleaning.
For a larger dog, having him lie on a table will
be safest for him and easiest for you. Make
sure that he feels safe and secure when he is
up there, and speak quietly and reassuringly
to him while you work.
Wrap you arm around him and grasp his
upper leg area to prevent him from trying to
get up while you take a look inside of his ears.
Do not dig inside the ear canal for any reason, leave that to a vet. If the dog's ear are excessively dirty,
or there is any chance that you are looking at an ear mite infestation, then by all means schedule a vet
check.
Otherwise, take a wet cotton ball, or soft cloth and wash the outer portions of the dog's ears, taking
care not to allow too much water to get down into the ear canal itself.
Continue to reassure your pet while you work and try not to be too slow about it. If your dog has really
long ears, you can flip them over, but some dogs truly seem to loathe this.
As amusing as it might seem, a smaller dog might actually be harder to get a good hold on or to keep
down, so you might need to recruit a helper for this one. Have the assistant hold the dog nice and
firmly, maybe even wrapping her in a towel or small blanket while you are working to prevent wriggling
or kicking.
Again, speak gently to your pet, letting it know that all will be well in just a matter of time. Inspect the
ears just as described above. If your dog's head and ears are darkly colored, you might need brighter
lighting or even a small flashlight to get a good visual on the inner ear.
Ask your veterinarian to show you exactly the best technique for your particular breed and what
exactly you are looking for.
Some breeds are more prone to ear infections, and dogs have more problems with their ears than cats
do, so watch for signs of an impending problems.
Floppy eared breeds (blood hounds, beagles, etc.) are the most susceptible to ear problems, but all
breeds should be checked regularly.

HELP PROTECT YOUR PETS FROM DEADLY PARALYSIS TICKS
Is your dog or cat immune to the threat of the Australian
paralysis tick ? Unfortunately, if you live in a paralysis tick
area, the answer is probably no. Dogs and cats can be a
perfect host for paralysis ticks.
Paralysis ticks can attach to your pet, sometimes when
wandering through bushy areas, thick grass or vegetation.
How bad for your pets are paralysis ticks?
In one word - very.
Once they’ve found their way onto an animal’s fur, paralysis
ticks can quickly reach the skin and attach themselves.
When they’ve latched on, they suck blood and also secrete a
nasty toxin. If the tick is left undetected on your pet, its toxin
can be very dangerous – even fatal.
Some of the symptoms related to the tick toxin include:
• Loss of coordination in the hind legs
• A change in the voice or bark, or coughing
• Loss of appetite, vomiting, retching and regurgitation
• Noisy grunting and breathing
• Excessive drooling
• Anxiety, hypersensitivity and distress
• Progressive paralysis
You may also be able to see red and raised skin around where the tick has attached itself or a ‘tick
crater’ may appear.
How long does it take for tick symptoms to appear?
In many cases signs of a paralysis tick won’t appear until the tick has been attached on your pet for
several days. Not all of the above-listed symptoms may be noticeable, and some of them are often
confused with other pet illnesses. Unfortunately, this means some owners put off taking their pet to the
veterinary clinic.
What can I do if my pet has a tick?
The first thing is to remove the tick and contact your veterinarian as soon as possible. The veterinarian
will assess your pet and then treat for tick toxicity if required.
Symptoms can take a while to show and unfortunately delay in removing the tick or treating the toxicity
can result in your pet’s death. As always, prevention is better than cure. If you find a tick on your pet,
don’t forget to continue searching for more.
How can I help protect my pet from paralysis ticks?
1. Avoid the tick habitat. Ask your veterinarian for advice if you are living in or planning to travel to a
paralysis tick area.
23 IPPTS Dog Health eBooks: Part 1
Paralysis ticks are generally found on the
eastern seaboard of Australia, but can be
found in slightly different areas and at
different times every year.
2. Thoroughly check your pet’s skin and coat
every day during the paralysis tick season -
even if you’re using a tick control product.
Feel and look for unusual lumps, and if you
find a tick, remove it straight away and call
your veterinarian.
3. Use a tick control product. If you have a
dog use Frontline PLUS® every 2 weeks. For
cats, use FRONTLINE® SPRAY every 3 weeks. Always remember to read the label instructions. To
remind you when a treatment is due, you can sign up for free email and SMS reminders at

AVOID PLAYING WITH STICKS AND AVOID INJURY BY PLAY IT SAFE WITH YOUR CANINE
Are you using a stick in your play with your dog? This
may not be ideal to use with your furry friend when
engaged in dog training in any form. However, the stick is
used by some as rewards for pets. You can use the stick
as a reward for your canine for behaving properly and you
can actually give your pet a treat by surprising him with a
stick.
One of the serious issues related to the use of stick is the
level of safety of this technique when used in the
guidance activity.
In fact, a lot of veterinarians discourage using a stick in
teaching our pets.
Nonetheless, there are safety precautions which you can
adopt so that this safety concern can be properly
addressed.
If you are seriously concerned about the use of the stick, it is a good idea to discuss this with your
veterinarian so that you can discuss more thoroughly the safe use of the stick with your pet.
In order to understand the safe way of using the stick on your dog, it is important that you are well
aware of the potential hazards to your pet.
1. Your pet may get impaled with the stick. Believe it or not, your pet can get impaled with the stick if
you don’t strictly observe the safety precautionary measures. Your pet can be seriously hurt if the stick
hits him in the throat, eye or mouth.
2. Your pet can seriously injured if struck on the head. This is very dangerous to your pet if the stick is
large, heavy and has sharp ends. Your pet can get hit by the stick on the forehead the injury can be
devastating.
3. It can also cause even more severe internal injuries to your canine.
4. The stick can get stuck inside the mouth. The last thing that you want to happen is when the stick is
wedged inside the mouth of your furry friend and stabbing the soft palette. This injury can vary in
severity but will require immediate medical attention.
In general, before you start using the stick as an essential item in the guidance activities for your pet, it
is important that you take the time to understand the risks.
Consider the expert opinion of veterinarians and professional trainers so that you will gain insights
from all possible perspectives. Don’t hesitat to talk with your veterinarian and consider all his
recommendations.
You may also go online and check out some relevant information about the use of the stick with your
dog. Feel free to take part in the discussions in forums about the topic.
If by chance, you don’t find the information you’re looking for, you may post your query online in sites
that offer this feature. In this way, you will be able to take the precautionary measures to ensure that
no harm will come to your friend.

TIPS ON AVOIDING URINARY TRACT INFECTION IN DOGS
Many pet owners today are not aware that
their dogs are also prone to developing UTI
(urinary tract infection). UTI is not necessarily
harmful to dogs during early stages.
However, if the infection is left alone for too
long, it could cause a more severe infection in
dogs affecting their major organs like kidneys.
Statistics have shown that approximately 14%
of the worldwide dog population will acquire
urinary tract infection.
Urinary Tract Infections (UTI's) are extremely
common, and many pet owners aren't educated in how to prevent them and because of this, let me
help you down on taking preventive measures for your dogs.
1. Bathe your dog regularly. Hygiene is one of the most important preventive measures when
preventing all forms of infection for our pets. Have your dogs take bath on a regular basis.
2. Give your dogs ample amounts of water daily. Make sure that your dog gets sufficient fluid intake.
Fluids are helpful for maintaining homeostasis in your pet’s body. Moreover, encouraging your dogs to
have an ample amount of water daily will also promote flushing of bacteria during urination.
3. Encourage good bladder habits. You should take or send your dog outside every few hours daily to
allow them to urinate regularly. This will prevent the build up of bacteria in the bladder, the common
site of UTI.
Signs and Symptoms
• Pain while urination or even crying while urinating
• Frequent licking of genitals
• Recurrent urination without passing much urine
• Urinating in odd places
• Hazy or bloody urine
• Fever and loss of appetite
Urinary infections in dogs are bacterial in nature. It's important to see a veterinarian for proper
treatment. Veterinarians would prescribe antibiotics for your pet. So make sure that you adhere to the
treatment as prescribed by your veterinarian in order to prevent possible recurrence of infection and
further complications.
Another way of ensuring your dogs health is by providing them a clean backyard and allowing
playtime.

HOW TO SPOT CANCER IN DOGS
I really haven’t thought that cancer could be
possible for dogs. We usually thought that
cancer could only affect us man, but don’t you
know that it could also affect your beloved
dog?
A dog’s cancer diagnosis is one of frightening
news you could ever face with your beloved
pet. Just the mere fact of losing your loved
one when they get sick is equally devastating
be it in your family or your beloved dog.
Up to date, cancer is one of the leading
causes of death of dogs in United States.
Study shows that 20 million dogs die yearly in the U.S. due to cancer in any forms. Around 1 out of 4
dogs are affected in the U.S. So, to all pet lovers out there, we need to stay vigilant in detecting cancer
in our animals. There are certain signs and symptoms that could signal dog cancer and they are the
following;
Signs of Cancer in Dogs

2. A sore that does not heal
3. Unusual growth of bumps or swelling or even drooling
4. Chronic vomiting or diarrhea
5. Difficulty in eating or swallowing
6. Fatigue or difficulty in exercising
7. Bleeding
8. Bad mouth odor
9. Lack of appetite
10. Weight loss
11. Nagging cough
12. Lethargy
The best treatment for cancer in dogs is prevention. All pet lovers are encouraged to manually
examine their dogs at home. Try to palpate your dogs body with your hands and observe for any signs
of lumps, bumps, or sores or any unusual growth. If you see any of this danger signs, perhaps, it’s
about time you submit your dog for a confirmatory diagnosis with your veterinarian.
Ensure that your dog receive the nutrition they need. Feed your dogs with high-quality and well-
balanced diet with low amounts of simple carbohydrates and high amounts of n-3 polyunsaturated

HOW TO TREAT CATARACTS IN DOGS
As your pet ages, maintaining his or her eye
health becomes a major concern. Over time,
free radicals can cause oxidative stress, and
animals have more difficulty fighting them off
as they get older.
Exposure to oxygen and sunlight causes a
chemical reaction from the cells considerable
oxidized environment.
The lens of the eye takes varying degrees of
oxidative punishment, as a result of acting as a
light shield for the retina. Enzymes are also
destroyed by the free radicals, which is a factor
in maintaining cellular metabolism.
Blood flow also decreases as the animal ages,
and nutrients are slowly depleted from the eye,
which causes even more stress and damage.
One of the most common conditions affecting the eyes of dogs is cataracts. The formation of cataracts
is caused by various things. All different breeds and ages of dogs are affected.
Certain breeds of dogs are more susceptible to cataracts than others, such as Cocker Spaniels,
Poodles, Miniature Schnauzers, and Terriers.
The type of cataracts that forms in dogs over 6 years old is called senile cataracts. However, cataracts
can develop much earlier than this and that is called developmental cataracts.
The causes of developmental cataracts in dogs may be hereditary, or caused by trauma, infection,
toxicity, diabetes among other things. Inherited cataracts is much more common in certain breeds
such as, Standard Poodles, and Afghan Hounds.
Cataracts is the interference of fibers of the lens that obstruct sight by blocking the lens clarity, either
partially or totally. Cataracts that are smaller may not initially disrupt the vision of your dog, but the
cataract could become larger and more dense and your dog may wind up going blind, if the cataracts
is not removed.
Treating dog cataracts with Can-C eye drops, which contains N-acetylcarnosine, has become an
effective option for many pet owners in recent years. N-acetylcarnosine has been proven in numerous
clinical trials and for the last 10 years or so, has been used by veterinarians, and pet owners around
the world.
Dr. Mark Babizhayev, founder of Innovative Vision Products originally developed the cutting edge,
non-invasive cataract treatment and subsequently performed many clinical studies on rabbits, dogs
and eventually humans to solidify the efficacy and safety of the N-acetylcarnosine 1% solution.
His studies were a complete success without one negative side effect, and significant, sustainable
benefits. The study found a remarkable 96% improvement of cataract affected canine eyes, including
29 IPPTS Dog Health eBooks: Part 1
major decrease in symptoms of cataracts, and
improved visual behavior within two weeks of
treatment.
The affected lens started its reversal of the
condition from the periphery, with an increase
in transparency of the whole lens throughout
the time frame of the trial.
The clinical studies of the canine cataracts
actually responded sooner to the treatments
than humans involved in the trials.
How to Diagnose Cataracts in Dogs:
 Take your dog to the veterinarian regularly
 Look for injuries or changes to your dogs eyes by examining them often
 Take your dog to the veterinarian if your dogs eyes appear hazy, or cloudy
 Look for changes in your dogs behavior, especially regarding his eye sight
 Be aware that certain health conditions like diabetes in your dog is a major contributing factor
in the formation of cataracts.

CANINE INCONTINENCE HOW TO HELP IN CURING YOUR DOG OF INCONTINENCE
Incontinence is classified by urine seeping
uncontrollably from the bladder. In a canine
who isn't afflicted by incontinence, he's very
easily capable to manage the seapage of
urine from the bladder via the use of muscular
tissue at the base of the bladder.
Usually, incontinence is triggered by
underlying medical difficulties.
Estrogen deficiency is one among the most
popular cause of incontinence in spayed
female dogs and may possibly result in
weakened muscle tissues inside the bladder
and sphincter causing urine leakage. Bovine
ovary powder nutritionally provides natural
estrogens and works synergistically with the phytoestrogens provided by licorice, wild yam and other
ingredients. Estrogens are powerful female hormones produced naturally by the ovary and required
for the usual development in the female reproductive tract and also for normal female fertility.
Synthetic estrogens have, inside past, found various medical as well as industrial applications.
Urinary tract infection (UTI) in puppies has become typical. This condition occurs when bacterias gains
access inside your dog's entire body and overcomes its body's defence mechanism. Urinary
incontinence may perhaps be triggered by an underdeveloped urinary system or may possibly arise
as a part from the aging process.Urinary tract infection typically occurs at a single site - the bladder,
ureters, kidneys, urethra, or the prostate glands. But it can have an effect on extra than a single web
site at the same time also.
An infection in the bladder or a condition known as urge incontinence is bring about by Bladder
Inflammation. This really is characterized by leakage or dribbling when the canine goes through the
urge to urinate. Bladder infections in dogs are extra popular in female dogs anyway, since the urethra
in females is shorter and also wider, which makes it less difficult for disease-causing bacteria to
get into the urinary system. A pet with female dog incontinence might also have a relaxed urinary
sphincter, which makes it even less difficult for pathogens to enter.
Hormone deficiencies are usually dealt with by way of the application of drugs. Diethylstilbestrol is a
single drug that is frequently used to elevate estrogen levels in bitches who have incontinence due to
low levels of estrogen. Hormone-responsive incontinence can take place months to years after a pet
is neutered. Physical examination and blood and urine tests are usually given for these pets.
Hormone-related incontinence can also have an effect on neutered males, though much less
commonly than females.
Female dogs are generally extra prone to this type of Dog skin disease. Rarely, dog incontinence
occurs as a result of tumors or polyps in your dog's urinary tract.
Female puppies are additional likely to have this birth defect than males.
Some research has also shown that large breed puppies are extra prone to incontinence. Female
dogs mate whenever their canine heat period arrives. This generally happens when the dog is
between six to twelve months of age.
31 IPPTS Dog Health eBooks: Part 1
Vets have to resort to using hormones and decongestants when
they cannot pinpoint causes of incontinence.
DES (diethylstilbestrol) a man-made form of estrogen is
normally prescribed for spayed female dogs. DES has been
extremely successful in treating female canine incontinence
stemming from poor sphincter manage.
It is still out there from compounding pharmacies, and at the low
(1mg) dose, doesn't have the carcinogenic properties that were
so problematic in humans.

  • 4. 3 IPPTS Dog Health eBooks: Part 1 FOREWORD This eBook “Dog Health: From Allergies to Vaccinations” was created from past posts from the eDogs and Puppies Blog which has been active for the last 5 years, and re-publishes some of the many high quality articles that have been donated anonymously by guest posters, over that period. This eBook is provided for entertainment use only. We are not vetinarians, so you must check all the information you find in this eBook before its use. Nevertheless, we think that our readers will agree that there is a great dela of useful information in this our Volume 1 Dog Health eBook. We will omly publish further editions if we find that we get good feedback, so please embed and share this document, and give us your comments on the site on which you found this, so that we know whether we should expend further time and money on further editions! INTRODUCTION In the first post we discussed how to recognize cancer in your pet, and we make no apology for starting on a sad note. Unfortunately, many dogs do sufferfrom cancer in old age and we hope this article will help to shed some light on a subject seldom aired in the dog owning community. From a very serious topic we move to one which on the surface is no more than an irritating one about how dogs get ticks and how to keep a dog tick-free. We do recommend that you read this as it, along with the third article “why you need to use flea treatment regularly”, suggests a natural remedy which our readers may want to try, and iot also gives guidance on lyme desease, which is a very serious matter for your pet if it contracts it. A dogs eyes and ears are admittedly probably second to a dogs ability to smell, but they emain hugely important to them to live an active life. That’s why we think that our articles on caring for your dog's eyes, and dog ear health, and how to keep a dog's ears free from parasitic infection, should be ones for our readers to take an active interest in. Next, we tackle the subject of health and safety and the importance of preventing dog accidents. But, as we accept that occasionally accidents will still happen, so the article also includes the first thing you do for a dog that has been injured. Next comes a subject which has to be included as it may assis some readers, we hope that is not you who needs to know about ”blood in a dog's stool”. Of course, the next topic is one with which all responsible dog owners soon become familiar after they start dog keeping, and that is the subject of being aware of your dog's health and how to spot early indications of illness.
  • 5. 4 IPPTS Dog Health eBooks: Part 1 From that it seemed appropriate to move on to the subject of dog ear yeast infections with an article, which includes natural home remedies for dog yeast infections. Telling infections from allergies can be difficult so we followed on to our next article on identification of dog allergies and what to do if you find your dog has an allergy. As the human population becomes increasingly overweigh so does the dog population, so we decided to include our next article about canine diabetes and how to prevent it. Continuing the discussion on prevention and avoidance of ill-health in dogs, rather than cures, we make a plea in the next article for the importance of dog vaccination. And, for our next article, still on the idea of prevention, we give useful tips about getting your dog to swallow a pill. Something which a dog will almost always be as reluctant to let the owner do, as getting tem to take a pill, is allowing their ears to be cleaned So, we hope our readers will find the next article on how to clean your dog's ears to be useful. It’s back to the subject of ticks again, in the next article, and this time we are in Australia for our article on how to help protect your pets from their deadly local “paralysis ticks”. As we have manetioned previosuly, we are all always keen to help prevent accidents if we can and that’s why we included the following article which is all about why you should avoid playing with sticks, and avoid injury by “playing it safe” with your canine. Another article which is not pleasant to think about, but needed to be included to help the dog owners who see this problem in their pets, follows with tips on avoiding urinary tract infections in their dogs. Three articles from the end, and we give our readers more details on how to spot cancer in dogs. The penultimate article covers an important piece of information on how to treat cataracts in dogs, with a positive recommendation on a product to check out. Finally, we return to canine incontinence with an article on how to help in curing your dog of incontinence. We suggest that now that you know what this eBook has to offer, you dive in, start reading, and get the most from this publication!
  • 6. 5 IPPTS Dog Health eBooks: Part 1 HOW TO RECOGNIZE CANCER IN YOUR PET Cancer is a type of malignant tumor or growths that invade the surrounding tissues and use the bloodstream to move spread to other parts of the body. Signs that the family pet might have cancer are abnormal swellings that continue to grow, sores are a few heel, bleeding or other discharge from body openings, the pet is having a difficult time eating and swallowing, persistent lameness, difficulty breathing, painful urination, chronic coughing, weight loss, fevers, lack of appetite, and stamina. Unfortunately, some cancers reappear even after removal of the offending tumor. Cancer can re-appear unless the tumor is removed and any remaining cancer cells properly treated. Because of improvements in veterinary care at nutritional needs family pets are living longer. As a direct result of the longer life span of family pets wore more cases of cancer are being seen. Radiation therapy exposes the malignant cells to high level of radiation with the hope that the radiation will kill the cancer cells. Chemical therapy is medication design to kill the cancer cells. In particularly aggressive forms of cancer chemical and radiation therapy is used jointly. Other forms of therapies used to treat and comfort your pet when they are diagnosed with cancer are grooming, nutritional support, Soft bedding, pain management, ulcer prevention, and physical therapy. • 7. 6 IPPTS Dog Health eBooks: Part 1 HOW DOGS GET TICKS AND KEEPING A DOG TICK-FREE Dogs and in general all pets tend to spend more time outdoors in summer. With dogs it is very important to be careful about bugs, parasites and micro organisms that can harm them while they get their whiff of fresh air. Precautions are necessary to keep these dangers away. One of these pests that can cause a lot of nuisance and damage are the ticks since they carry diseases. Avoiding the ticks is of prime importance. It’s better than curing at a later stage. Ticks tend to stick to warmer temperatures, and are attracted when they detect raised Carbon Dioxide, and movement. Ticks do not transmit through the air. Their motion is limited to crawling. They transmit themselves by climbing up taller structures or plants and drop onto any living and moving human or animal. The danger of diseases or kinds of diseases transmitted by ticks can be substantial but it very much depends upon the country and culture in which you live, therefore the cure of after effects of ticks and ticks itself varies from country to country. The danger of having ticks on your dogs body sets in once the tick bites. The bite itself is painless and unfeeling but the place of bite might get infected in no time. Consulting a veterinarian is advisable for treatment which normally involves oral antibiotics. If your pet dog is diseased due to a tick bite, there is a risk of infection spreading due to your dog salivation on or biting another pet. The most popular disease spread by a tick bite is the lyme disease but not the only one. The best way to avoid ticks is to avoid walking your dog in the midst of vegetation during tick season. Always keep the vegetation around your house trimmed. Certain preventive medication products are also available. More information can be gathered from your veterinarian about suitability of these to your dog in respect to age and area. Do not use medications without consulting and proper instructions must be followed in using this kind of medication. Please remember that these medications are suited for a single class of pets only, meaning that tick prevention medication for dogs is for dogs only and should not be used on cats or any other pets. When your dog comes back from outdoors be sure to check him thoroughly for ticks. They are normally found in warm areas, under the arms, in the ears, between the toes and in the folds of the skin. If you find any, remove them safely. Do not touch the tick, use a alcohol swab, then pull it up slowly with tweezers. Make sure not to leave any parts of the tick sticking to your dog. If you are unsuccessful contact your vet.
  • 8. 7 IPPTS Dog Health eBooks: Part 1 WHY YOU NEED TO USE FLEA TREATMENT REGULARLY ON YOUR DOG AND OTHER PETS Fleas can be a large problem when it comes to your pets and home, fleas make everyone itch and scratch. But it also gives dogs rashes in some cases. House pets are not the only ones effected by the menace of fleas, strays are also infected. However you can at least treat your house to prevent them from being in your home, causing everyone and all animals that live there annoyance and bites. There are ways to prevent fleas from coming in, and there are also Flea Treatments that kill fleas. A good flea treatment to get for animals is Frontline. Frontline kills ninety-eight to one hundred percent of fleas. How fast does this work? Frontline kills fleas within 24 hours of application. After application the treatment is good for one month. Best of all it is also waterproof for thirty days. Frontline is also gentle and can be used on puppies and kittens at least 8 weeks old. Treatment works so well because of Frontline’s special formula that is designed to not only kill the adult fleas but also the young ones and eggs. Coming in 4 sizes for dogs based on weight, and 1 dose for cats. Frontline comes in three packs or six packs depending on what you prefer. Using Frontline is easy, all you have to do is cut the top of the container with a pair of scissors, then open the applicator, and apply between the shoulder blades on the skin under all the hair. There are three brands of Frontline to consider. Spray; Which can be applied for sever flea or tick infestation, multi-pet house, for quick treatment. Top Spot; For owners who want long lasting action and owners who want typical application. Plus; This brand carries an additional ingredient (S)- methoprene this is the chemical used to kill the eggs and young fleas not just the adults. Frontline kills fleas and ticks when they come in contact with the pet who was treated. There are many forms of flea treatment out there on the market. However not all of them work very well, and your veterinarian might know which brand can or will work best for your animal. Thoroughly cleaning the places around where your pets go helps reduce Flea infestation. This includes your home, it is suggested that you vacuum your carpets and furniture at least twice a week to help in prevention. There are also chemical treatments available that can help with the outdoors however they can be toxic to your animals and kids so you might want to be careful before application. Collar applicators can also be purchased however these can be sometimes ineffective since they only work on the animal and can be toxic if the animal or another chews on them. You can also boost your animals immune system as bad as it sounds. Mowing your grass outside and in your ditches also gets rid of some of the potential homes of fleas. Fleas like areas that are near where animals normally travel, be it in the woods, out in the park, or in the backyard. Recognizing these places helps in prevention.
  • 9. 8 IPPTS Dog Health eBooks: Part 1 NATURAL WAYS TO REDUCE FLEA PROBLEMS If you are more worried about the effects these products can have on your animals and potentially your children there are also natural ways to get rid of fleas, however you might want to look them up and decide if they are right for you, some of the natural ways can also have bad effects depending on which you choose. One of the natural deterrents used is natural garlic not purchased in packages but rather bought fresh. This method is rumored to make the blood of your pet unappealing to fleas. There are no scientific studies to prove this however given garlic’s healing properties it is worth a shot if you want to try. If you choose this method only use a few small slivers in a meal for the cat or dog. Depending on the size of the animal the proportion of garlic may need to be more or less.
  • 10. 9 IPPTS Dog Health eBooks: Part 1 CARING FOR YOUR DOG’S EYES Your dog's eyes can often be regarded as the windows to his health. Problems with a dog’s eyes might point to other issues, like vascular disease affecting the blood and the blood circulation system. DOG EYE HEALTH PROBLEMS THAT CAN SIGNAL VASCULAR DISORDERS Bleeding Blood Vessels: Does your dog have blood coming out of the blood vessels in the eyeball? That's a complaint known as intraocular hemorrhage, and it's a condition that may mean your pet has a circulatory condition. You should also know that a diagnosis of retinal detachment, where the retina separates from the choroid, can lead to a diagnosis of vascular disease. Lastly, if your pet suffers from papilledema, a swollen blind spot that's caused by excessive fluid build-up, that condition may also be indicative of a vascular condition in your pet dog. WHEN TO CONSULT YOUR VET If your pet has any of these dog eye health disorders, you should arrange an appointment with your vet to have your dog checked over to see if he has a disorder that interferes with his blood circulation. If your pet has already been diagnosed with one of these dog eye health conditions, be sure to follow your veterinarian's instructions and give your pet any prescribed medicine or treatment for the disorder. DOG EYE HEALTH PROBLEMS THAT CAN SIGNAL INFECTIOUS DISORDERS Watch out for inflammation, or redness, around the tissue that surrounds your dog's eye. This health condition, known as conjunctivitis, may mean your pet has a virus, a bacterial disease, parasites, or allergies. Conjunctivitis: is considered one of the most common conditions diagnosed today, and it is usually easily treated by keeping the dog's eyes in good health, keeping them clean, and giving medicine for a short while to eliminate the cause of the infection. If your pet has conjunctivitis, his eyes will itch. Try to stop him from scratching his eyes while you are treating his eye health problems. Get a cone-shaped collar from your vet if need be, so your pet's conjunctive eye tissue health infection will have a chance to heal. KNOW YOUR BREED Some breeds are prone to have more dog eye health problems than other dogs, so it is important to be familiar with any dog eye health problems particular to your dog's breed. German Shepherd breeds, for instance, are susceptible to chronic superficial keratitis, and some toy breeds can experience eye problems if their hair is not kept out of their eyes.
  • 11. 10 IPPTS Dog Health eBooks: Part 1 Of course, you must also ensure that your dog is properly house trained. Check out these articles to learn more about the best methods. puppy potty training
  • 12. 11 IPPTS Dog Health eBooks: Part 1 DOG EAR HEALTH AND HOW TO KEEP A DOG’S EARS FREE FROM PARASITIC INFECTION Everyone knows how good a dog’s sense of smell is, but not so many owners would be aware that a dog’s hearing is equally good and important to its well being, and in fact is essential for his health. A dog that has issues with hearing will be severely robbed of being able to ascertain sounds which will make the dog feel less than happy. So, it is important for you to recognize that you need to pay close attention to dog ear health to ensure that he stays perky as well as healthy, and of course, happy. DEAFNESS MIGHT BE A SIGN OF OTHER HEALTH PROBLEMS If you note your dog’s ear health starting to decline such as his becoming deaf you should immediately have him checked by a veterinarian as it may actually be an indication of some other illness or even infection. In order to ensure your dog’s ear health, you should have him regularly checked by a vet and such check-ups should also form a part of his routine upkeep, and some parts on your dog’s anatomy that merit being checked regularly include where places that have cuts, sores as well as abscesses and even infectious parts. While checking your dog ear health, you need to look very closely at his ear canal and this you can do by drawing his ears back and also up so that his eardrum becomes easily visible. Signs of poor health in his ear canal are when the canal seems to be wet or are slightly inflamed and if this is seen, then you should take your pet to the vet for a check-up. Another factor in ear health is the possibility of mite infestation which is known to occur under normal circumstances, but especially when ear wax is allowed to build up in your pet’s ears because such earwax is ideal feeding ground for mites which will then result in bacterial infections as well as inflammation in the ear canal. However, by treating the ears with antibiotic, you should not have any problem in getting rid of the mites though the treatment may have to be administered for about three weeks which is plenty of time to rid the dog of all of the mites at their various stages of development. Also, to ensure proper dog ear health, you must also clean his ears gently with warm water that also contains an ear wash solution and to also ensure that you remove all moistness from the ears after the wash as a damp dog’s ear can encourage bacterial growth. If you follow these simple steps in ensuring proper care for your dogs’ ears, you can at least ensure that many such common dog ear health problems do not crop up, and thus you will have protected your pet’s hearing which is so vital to his well being.
  • 13. 12 IPPTS Dog Health eBooks: Part 1 PREVENTING DOG ACCIDENTS AND THE FIRST THING YOU DO FOR A DOG THAT HAS BEEN INJURED Though it is an unpleasant thought, it is quite possible that in the lifetime of your dog he or she will get hurt. Hopefully, usually it will not be a debilitating injury and will be one they recover from quickly. The best way to insure your dog doesn't get injured is to train your dog. Obedience is the key here. If your dog goes into the street they could get hit by a car. So to avoid that, you want to train your dog to obey words like "stay", or "sit". Other possibilities of injury are dog fights. Training won't insure that your dog never gets hurt, but should make the chances of it happening far less likely. So if your dog does get hurt, what do you do? The first thing you need to do is assess the situation. If you are around at the time of incident, then you will immediately know what just happened. If not, then you will get a good indication when you examine your dog. If your dog is unable to walk or won't come to you then you know there is a very good chance there are broken bones. Make sure to carefully look them over. The worst possibility is that there is a spine injury. The next step is to get them to a safe place. If they can't move, then to keep them from greater injury it is good to get a coat or something flat under them. Then you can either drag them away, or if possible, carry them to safety. If they are bleeding a lot, then try to find some cloth to wrap around the wound to stop bleeding. You might have to tear or cut off a piece of your shirt if this is the case, or use your coat if you have one. Another thing you can do is use their collar to help stop bleeding if there is nothing else. Just tighten it up as best you can. Some kinds of collars won't work though. It will be hard, but one of the best things you can do is to reassure your dog by using a calm voice. Just keep speaking to them. If you and your dog have had time to bond, then your dog should already see you as security and comfort. It won't help much, but it will help. Of course the next thing to do is to get them to the vet quickly. Even if the injury isn't severe, it is good to take them anyways.
  • 14. 13 IPPTS Dog Health eBooks: Part 1 BLOOD IN A DOG’S STOOL IS USUALLY CAUSED BY MELENA The number one cause of blood in dog stool is Melena, which along with hematochezia is the main reason why your dog will show blood in his stool. Melena itself is the blood digested by dogs and it is of a dark color while hematochezia is like fresh blood found in a dog’s stool and is not as serious an issue as Melena. Even though the reasons for blood in a dog’s stool are many, they can be identified after testing carried out by a veterinarian. The main effect of blood in the stool is that your pet will generally show signs of having poor energy and may often also suffer from incontinence. Accidents can happen as the dog is not capable of getting outdoors quickly. To prevent this condition, you may need to restrict how much food the dog is allowed to eat which will have the effect of stopping his diarrhea and eventually also allows the intestines to heal. However, when the problem is due to infections or even because of bacterial parasites, the condition will continue till treated with medications or other medical means. Dog blood in stool is a problem that may affect any dog no matter what its breed or size and can occur even despite your best endeavors to prevent it. Common causes for the problem may include medications and infections as well as cancer and presence of foreign objects in the intestines of the dog, and even metabolic disorders or hemorrhaging gastro enteritis are other causes for blood in stool. Also, you need to be extra careful should blood in stool also show other signs such as paleness of gums, excessive thirst, frequent bouts of urination, loss of appetite or loss of weight. As a first line of defense, you may try giving your dog a bland diet that consists of rice as well as potatoes and substitute these foods for its regular food. However, if this does not work, then you need to take your pet to a vet who can then diagnose why blood in stool is occurring and then suggest suitable treatment options. Some of the tests that might need to be carried out for blood in stool include urinalysis, biochemical work up as well as blood work up and diagnosing sample stool as well as conducting ultrasound and even having the dog’s chest and abdomen X-rayed. Hopefully, blood in stool condition may turn out to be less than severe and if that is the case, you can simply treat him at home by giving him a special diet, though in more serious cases, you may need to medicate him in order to prevent stomach acids and to also coat his intestines. And if even this does prevent dog health blood in stool, you need to have the vet make more investigations to pinpoint the exact causes and suggest suitable treatments.
  • 15. 14 IPPTS Dog Health eBooks: Part 1 BEING AWARE OF YOUR DOG’S HEALTH AND EARLY INDICATIONS OF ILLNESS Dog health can easily be taken care of by instilling good habits in the pet and training him well. A healthy dog is a happy pet having a positive attitude and personality. puppy potty training tips You must ensure food habits are regular and diet is well balanced. And make sure you give him exercise on a daily basis and give him the attention and love that he needs, and he will be a healthy dog. Let us look at good dog health and symptoms:  All healthy dogs should have clear, bright eyes and a glossy, full coat.  The skin should be clear and an important sign of a healthy dog is a dry nose, which is free from discharge.  He should have lots of energy and a good appetite.  All movements should be natural and free from pain. Good dog care encourages the dog to have a good and correct weight, based on the breed standards. Pet owners should be aware that puppies are born with some immunity, but with time the immunity diminishes greatly. Therefore, vaccinations are vital. Viral infections are frequent among dogs and vaccination can prevent many of these infections. Some infections are parvo, adenovirus, corona, rabies and distemper. But all diseases and illnesses cannot be prevented by simply vaccinating the dog. Therefore the pet must be monitored carefully in order to identify any issues as quickly as possible. The best person to know and recognize any health issuesis the dog-owner. All dog-owners should inform themselves about the normal working health of the dog. Then it becomes easier to judge disease symptoms, and when they occur, they should make sure that know the basics of how to care for a sick dog when they take ownership.
  • 16. 15 IPPTS Dog Health eBooks: Part 1 DOG EAR YEAST INFECTIONS NATURAL HOME REMEDIES FOR DOG YEAST INFECTIONS The first things that hit me about keeping dogs was the sheer terror when something goes wrong not to mention the huge cost. Though you hope your dog understands your every word there’s not a lot of help that we can provide in times of illness other than comfort. Both my dogs, as I think most dogs have, suffered from awful dog yeast infections of the ear. It cost the dogs a lot of pain and discomfort and it cost me a lot of time and money. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to spend whatever is necessary for my dogs but when you see the terror in their faces when they go to the vets, it's real easy to question it! Yeast Infection Dog I decided to look for natural and holistic cures after one of my dogs got rather through the antibiotics prescribed to him. To cut a long story short I did a lot of research, befriended a vet and asked him what he thought about the mass of information I’d found. Well to say my eyes were opened was an understatement. The very dog yeast ear drops I was sold by my vet could be made in my kitchen and there were a whole bunch of home remedies he recommended that are natural and far more effective than antibiotics – not to mention far less damaging to our pets health. All Natural Home Remedies To this day both my dogs have gone from 4-5 dog yeast infections a year each to no times in the last two years that I’ve had to take my dogs to the vets for anything to do with their ears. My methods also show you what to do when they DON'T have a yeast infection to prevent it coming on in the first place. What I’ve discovered isn’t just one method I’ve found for dog yeast infections either. I have spent a lot of time researching and interviewing qualified experts to reveal all kinds of new techniques. The main thing is that for all this time neither of my pets has had a dog yeast infection and it has spared them many trips to dog hell!. Your dog may not mind a trip to the vets, I see them in the waiting room, the calm ones. But when they don’t like it…Life gets pretty tough, especially with two of them! Vet approved and recommended That aside you can imagine the stress the the entire thing must cause for the dog. In pain, bundled into the car, driven to the dog equivalent of hell! And for what? To get back in that car again! My two really do suffer in the car, badly. The fact that I’ve eliminated (so far) any dog yeast infections, has saved them a lot of pain and a lot of stress. It’s done the same for me to!
  • 17. 16 IPPTS Dog Health eBooks: Part 1 IDNTIFICATION OF DOG ALLERGIES AND WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND YOUR DOG HAS AN ALLERGY If you are one of the many allergy sufferers you know who miserable it can make you. Now imagine your dog suffering from allergies and how miserable she must be. She cannot complain and she cannot ask for help. So as responsible dog owners it is up to us to figure out when she is having an allergy outbreak and to provide her with medicine as soon as possible. Similar to humans, dog allergies are usually passed through genetics from parents to puppies. There are various things that can cause a dog to have an allergic reaction. The more common dog allergies include dog food allergies, protein allergies, allergies to pollen, and dog skin allergies. Thankfully they are all treatable with proper treatment and monitoring. Change her dog food until you find one that does not trigger a dog food allergy. You should be able to find other treatments for other types of allergies. If you believe your dog has allergies then schedule a vet appointment. You vet can examine her and then recommend the best course of treatment. The easiest way to identify dog allergies is to know your dog. Know what “normal” looks like for her. So, when you see something that seems to be out of the ordinary you can take a closer look. This can be helpful not only in identifying potential allergies, but it can help to identify the start of other illnesses as well. Several symptoms can indicate that your dog may be allergic to something. You may notice that she is always scratching, or she may be gnawing at her skin. There is no sure set of symptoms that you can use to identify your dog’s allergies since there is no telling how a dog will exactly react to something. So any changes in behavior that you see is grounds for further investigation. Try to find out what is causing the change in your dog’s behavior. Dog allergies should be identified and treated as soon as you can. This can help you poor little dog to avoid additional pain and discomfort and bring her some relief to her allergy suffering. If you got your dog from a breeder then it is quite likely that they can tell you if her parents had dog allergies too. That may make it a bit easier to pinpoint what she may be allergic to.
  • 18. 17 IPPTS Dog Health eBooks: Part 1 CANINE DIABETES – HOW TO PREVENT IT Diabetes There are essentially 3 ways that you can help prevent your dog from getting diabetes. This illness is one that you want to avoid so that the dog lives as long and healthy as possible. And although it's rare, there are many dogs whose diabetes go into remission just by having their diet, supplementation, and exercise all in good order. 1. Lower the carbohydrates. Most dog foods sold in pet shops can have close to 98% carbs. By minimizing the amount of carbohydrates in your dog's daily meals, this decreased carb level can go a long way towards diabetes prevention. The diet is very critical for dogs that are genetically at risk for canine diabetes. It is crucial that you study up on your dog breed and make sure that he is getting the right nutrients so that the gene which can store diabetes will not be triggered off. Golden retrievers are among the most popular pets that dog owners have in the United States. Unfortunately, many of these retrievers get diabetes because their owners did not do enough research for their breed type in order to get their diet correct from puppy hood. 2. Find the best vet in your city. Discuss with the vet natural options. a lot of dog owners miss this very crucial dog diabetes prevention step. taking with organic products such as antioxidants and herbs for the immune system can make a big impact on preventing diabetes, especially for the dog breeds which are genetically at risk for this disease. 3. Physical exercise! It is very sad to see so many dogs out there who develop canine diabetes that should never have in the first place had they been active and not become overweight. This of course is the direct responsibility of you, the dog owner. If your dog is inactive and gains weight, he can develop diabetes even if he is not a breed that is genetically at risk. 30 minutes of fast walking two to three times daily is all your dog needs for perfect health and to keep him in good shape. If you can go jogging with your dog then that is even better. Having your dog swim is also a great option for exercise.
  • 19. 18 IPPTS Dog Health eBooks: Part 1 IMPORTANCE OF DOG VACCINATION Dogs are meant to be the most faithful animal on this universe. They are treated as the best buddies. So their care and health is our responsibility. Dog vaccination is one of the ways. Dogs have a natural immunity system also which they get from their mothers in milk, but it is not enough for them. As soon as they get older they loose their immunity so they need to be vaccinated. TYPES OF VACCINATIONS: 1.Most dogs are vaccinated for Lyme disease if the disease is prevalent in their area. Lyme disease is very prevalent in warmer climates and areas where it is warm and humid. Your pup should be vaccinated for this disease if you plan on doing any type of traveling with your pet. It will cause severe arthritis and lethargy in your dog and can recur once your pet has been infected. It is not a fatal disease and usually can be treated with antibiotics. 2. RABIES DOG VACCINATIONS This vaccine works to stimulate the immune system in other to fight against the virus if the dog is exposed to such a virus. The dead rabies virus is given as a vaccination and the body considers it a foreign body, thus building antibodies to fight against it. If the dog receives a bite from an infected anima with the virus, the body now has enough antibodies to fight the virus, therefore your faithful companion does not fall victim to a fatal virus. 3. DISTEMPER DOG VACCINATIONS Distemper is a viral infection that affects the immune system and can lead to serious complications if not death. This disease is contracted from contact with the excretions of an infected dog. Airborne particles can also contribute to infecting other dogs. Dogs rarely survive, but when they do, they suffer from muscle spasms and convulsions. The symptoms of a fever are a temperature of over 104 degrees, depression, pus in the eyes, convulsions, diarrhea and vomiting. If you see these signs, you need to contact your vet immediately. Proper vaccination of your dog prevents this viral disease from taking the life or livelihood of your companion. 4. PARVOVIRUS DOG VACCINATIONS Puppies under six months of age succumb to this particular disease. The intestinal tract, lymphoid tissue, immune system and the bone marrow are affected. Symptoms may be vomiting, convulsion weight loss and dehydration with coughing. For some puppies, death is immediate. Puppies need proper medical attention and proper vaccinations to prevent such an untimely demise. 5. LEPTOSPIROSIS

  • 21. 20 IPPTS Dog Health eBooks: Part 1 USEFUL TIPS ABOUT GETTING YOUR DOG TO SWALLOW A PILL Today, canines have become like another child. We dress them, buy beds for them and worry about there health. That is why a dog’s health should definitely be the top priority. There are many vitamins for promoting health and a vast range of medicines to heal. In our modern times we now have drugs to stop infections, get rid of parasites, dog pneumonia, and many other problems that may occur. However there are not very many canine that are available in tasty tablets like many vitamins on the market. Most of the medicines are bad tasting and our dog companions usually try to run and hide when they see the capsules coming their way. There are many tricks to give medication you might try if you have trouble giving your pooch their daily vitamin or medicine. The first way is to go to your dog and give him a tasty treat without a pill. It should be something strong tasting such as peanut butter or soft cheese on a dog biscuit. Then instantly give him the pill covered in the same tasty thing. This helps to get a good flavor in their mouth first and then hopefully they will be excited and just eat the whole thing. They also make convenient pill packets in various flavors that dogs love that are less messy. The next way is for the more sly pooches; the ones who hide the pill in their mouth until you are not looking and then just spit it out on the floor. This strategy unfortunately is a little more hands on but with your kind voice and soft hand you can make the experience a pleasant one. Remember to always go to your dog first. Never call their name. They might associate that with pill time and be fearful. First have your dog sit (reassure him) then gently take one hand and open their mouth. With the other hand place the pill as far back in the throat as possible keeping the head tilted up. Gently pet their throat as this will cause them to swallow the pill. Then instantly praise your dog with verbal praise and maybe his most favorite delicious treat after they swallow the pill. This will create a positive experience for your canine and hopefully they will remember the tasty treat next time. The real truth is that our dogs don’t live nearly as long as we do. So as dog owners we try to make their lives as comfortable as we can. Not only is it not fun to have to take a unhealthy dog to the vet for a vet bill, it is not fun to see your pooch sick. So by bringing positive association into the pill taking process, you should be able to give any pills that they might need to take in the future. We love our dogs and always try to do what is right for them. After all, if we care for our best friends right they will be healthy and happy and live a long life. Along with helpful dog tips, you can find many great pet gifts for your canine at blingblingpuppy our online store.
  • 22. 21 IPPTS Dog Health eBooks: Part 1 HOW TO CLEAN YOUR DOG'S EARS Some dogs will let you do what you will for them without a fight and some would rather gnaw off the hand that feeds them than sit still for a simple ear cleaning. For a larger dog, having him lie on a table will be safest for him and easiest for you. Make sure that he feels safe and secure when he is up there, and speak quietly and reassuringly to him while you work. Wrap you arm around him and grasp his upper leg area to prevent him from trying to get up while you take a look inside of his ears. Do not dig inside the ear canal for any reason, leave that to a vet. If the dog's ear are excessively dirty, or there is any chance that you are looking at an ear mite infestation, then by all means schedule a vet check. Otherwise, take a wet cotton ball, or soft cloth and wash the outer portions of the dog's ears, taking care not to allow too much water to get down into the ear canal itself. Continue to reassure your pet while you work and try not to be too slow about it. If your dog has really long ears, you can flip them over, but some dogs truly seem to loathe this. As amusing as it might seem, a smaller dog might actually be harder to get a good hold on or to keep down, so you might need to recruit a helper for this one. Have the assistant hold the dog nice and firmly, maybe even wrapping her in a towel or small blanket while you are working to prevent wriggling or kicking. Again, speak gently to your pet, letting it know that all will be well in just a matter of time. Inspect the ears just as described above. If your dog's head and ears are darkly colored, you might need brighter lighting or even a small flashlight to get a good visual on the inner ear. Ask your veterinarian to show you exactly the best technique for your particular breed and what exactly you are looking for. Some breeds are more prone to ear infections, and dogs have more problems with their ears than cats do, so watch for signs of an impending problems. Floppy eared breeds (blood hounds, beagles, etc.) are the most susceptible to ear problems, but all breeds should be checked regularly.
  • 23. 22 IPPTS Dog Health eBooks: Part 1 HELP PROTECT YOUR PETS FROM DEADLY PARALYSIS TICKS Is your dog or cat immune to the threat of the Australian paralysis tick ? Unfortunately, if you live in a paralysis tick area, the answer is probably no. Dogs and cats can be a perfect host for paralysis ticks. Paralysis ticks can attach to your pet, sometimes when wandering through bushy areas, thick grass or vegetation. How bad for your pets are paralysis ticks? In one word - very. Once they’ve found their way onto an animal’s fur, paralysis ticks can quickly reach the skin and attach themselves. When they’ve latched on, they suck blood and also secrete a nasty toxin. If the tick is left undetected on your pet, its toxin can be very dangerous – even fatal. Some of the symptoms related to the tick toxin include: • Loss of coordination in the hind legs • A change in the voice or bark, or coughing • Loss of appetite, vomiting, retching and regurgitation • Noisy grunting and breathing • Excessive drooling • Anxiety, hypersensitivity and distress • Progressive paralysis You may also be able to see red and raised skin around where the tick has attached itself or a ‘tick crater’ may appear. How long does it take for tick symptoms to appear? In many cases signs of a paralysis tick won’t appear until the tick has been attached on your pet for several days. Not all of the above-listed symptoms may be noticeable, and some of them are often confused with other pet illnesses. Unfortunately, this means some owners put off taking their pet to the veterinary clinic. What can I do if my pet has a tick? The first thing is to remove the tick and contact your veterinarian as soon as possible. The veterinarian will assess your pet and then treat for tick toxicity if required. Symptoms can take a while to show and unfortunately delay in removing the tick or treating the toxicity can result in your pet’s death. As always, prevention is better than cure. If you find a tick on your pet, don’t forget to continue searching for more. How can I help protect my pet from paralysis ticks? 1. Avoid the tick habitat. Ask your veterinarian for advice if you are living in or planning to travel to a paralysis tick area.

This injury can vary in severity but will require immediate medical attention. In general, before you start using the stick as an essential item in the guidance activities for your pet, it is important that you take the time to understand the risks. UTI is not necessarily harmful to dogs during early stages. However, if the infection is left alone for too long, it could cause a more severe infection in dogs affecting their major organs like kidneys. Statistics have shown that approximately 14% of the worldwide dog population will acquire urinary tract infection. Urinary Tract Infections (UTI's) are extremely common, and many pet owners aren't educated in how to prevent them and because of this, let me help you down on taking preventive measures for your dogs. 1. Bathe your dog regularly. Hygiene is one of the most important preventive measures when preventing all forms of infection for our pets. Have your dogs take bath on a regular basis. 2. Give your dogs ample amounts of water daily. Make sure that your dog gets sufficient fluid intake. Fluids are helpful for maintaining homeostasis in your pet’s body. Moreover, encouraging your dogs to have an ample amount of water daily will also promote flushing of bacteria during urination. 3. Encourage good bladder habits. You should take or send your dog outside every few hours daily to allow them to urinate regularly. This will prevent the build up of bacteria in the bladder, the common site of UTI. Signs and Symptoms • Pain while urination or even crying while urinating • Frequent licking of genitals • Recurrent urination without passing much urine • Urinating in odd places • Hazy or bloody urine • Fever and loss of appetite Urinary infections in dogs are bacterial in nature. It's important to see a veterinarian for proper treatment. Veterinarians would prescribe antibiotics for your pet. So make sure that you adhere to the treatment as prescribed by your veterinarian in order to prevent possible recurrence of infection and further complications. Another way of ensuring your dogs health is by providing them a clean backyard and allowing playtime.

  • 29. 28 IPPTS Dog Health eBooks: Part 1 HOW TO TREAT CATARACTS IN DOGS As your pet ages, maintaining his or her eye health becomes a major concern. Over time, free radicals can cause oxidative stress, and animals have more difficulty fighting them off as they get older. Exposure to oxygen and sunlight causes a chemical reaction from the cells considerable oxidized environment. The lens of the eye takes varying degrees of oxidative punishment, as a result of acting as a light shield for the retina. Enzymes are also destroyed by the free radicals, which is a factor in maintaining cellular metabolism. Blood flow also decreases as the animal ages, and nutrients are slowly depleted from the eye, which causes even more stress and damage. One of the most common conditions affecting the eyes of dogs is cataracts. The formation of cataracts is caused by various things. All different breeds and ages of dogs are affected. Certain breeds of dogs are more susceptible to cataracts than others, such as Cocker Spaniels, Poodles, Miniature Schnauzers, and Terriers. The type of cataracts that forms in dogs over 6 years old is called senile cataracts. However, cataracts can develop much earlier than this and that is called developmental cataracts. The causes of developmental cataracts in dogs may be hereditary, or caused by trauma, infection, toxicity, diabetes among other things. Inherited cataracts is much more common in certain breeds such as, Standard Poodles, and Afghan Hounds. Cataracts is the interference of fibers of the lens that obstruct sight by blocking the lens clarity, either partially or totally. Cataracts that are smaller may not initially disrupt the vision of your dog, but the cataract could become larger and more dense and your dog may wind up going blind, if the cataracts is not removed. Treating dog cataracts with Can-C eye drops, which contains N-acetylcarnosine, has become an effective option for many pet owners in recent years. N-acetylcarnosine has been proven in numerous clinical trials and for the last 10 years or so, has been used by veterinarians, and pet owners around the world. Dr. Mark Babizhayev, founder of Innovative Vision Products originally developed the cutting edge, non-invasive cataract treatment and subsequently performed many clinical studies on rabbits, dogs and eventually humans to solidify the efficacy and safety of the N-acetylcarnosine 1% solution. His studies were a complete success without one negative side effect, and significant, sustainable benefits. The study found a remarkable 96% improvement of cataract affected canine eyes, including
