Maintaining Sanity on Snow Days
Sigh. I’m writing this at the end of the 5th business day in a row in which our kids should have been in school
but weren’t. Eight days into 2014 and they have yet to see the inside of their school this year. Today’s reason
is mind-boggling. The salt is f inally working and the ice is f inally melting. If you’re like me, a work-at-home
business owner whose kids have been home because of the weather, you can use ideas for
maintaining sanity on snow days.
Electronic Babysitter – I hate to admit it, however when I have a client interview or phone meeting on the
calendar I of ten resort to the electronic babysitter. Television, video games, e-Reader, tablet, etc., my kids are
set up.
Inside Snow Fun – When the wind chill is -17° it is really too cold to be outside.
Unf ortunately your children may repeatedly ask if they can play outside. And by repeatedly
I mean every f ive minutes f or hours. Your solution? Bring the snow inside! Load up their
sled with the awesome white stuff and plop it in the bathtub.
Dress your kids up in their snowsuits, boots and mittens and let them play in the snow.
When they are f inished you can melt the snow down the drain f ast with hot water or
simply let it melt in the heat of the indoors. And best yet? They can take their wet clothes
of f in the bathroom without tracking snow through the rest of your house.
Hide and Go Seek – What kid doesn’t like a game of Hide and Go Seek, especially when
Mom and/or Dad are playing? You know you’re the champion when it comes to
finding the best hiding spot, so take your smartphone along for the long
wait you have to be found. Be sure to turn all your tones of f , however, or you
will be discovered right away. I know I, Kim, am the Queen of Hide and Go Seek
around here, just because the boys never think to look f or me in the kitchen or
bathroom cabinets.
Inside Magical Fort – What’s the worse that can happen if you take all the
cushions of f your couch and let the kids build a f ort out of them? Give them a
couple f lashlights, a stack of construction paper and some packing tape and
they can decorate the inside to their hearts content.
If you’ve never seen it, in the movie “The Holiday”, Cameron Diaz is invited
inside the f ort of her beau’s daughters. Decorated magnif icently with glittered
up stars and other decorations, the f ort would be any girl’s dream, including my
own!
Busy Work – Depending on how old your children are, they may occasionally
ask if they can work with you. While you probably can’t give them real work to
do, you can certainly print out some entertaining worksheets and give them your
highlighters and staplers to make their work look super snazzy and
prof essional.
