San Joaquin Valley Rural Development Center
In one of the country’s most economically distressed regions, where the unemployment rate is consistently over 10 percent, the median household income is $46,981, and 23 percent of the population lives in poverty, the San Joaquin Valley Rural Development Center (SJVRDC) provides a “one-stop shop” for rural residents, small businesses, municipalities, and nonprofits to access information, resources, services, and experts in specific subject matter. Aside from connecting its rural stakeholders to faculty, students, research centers, and academic facilities housed at Fresno State, the SJVRDC provides a multitude of services aimed at building the local capacity and improving the quality of life of the rural communities it serves. Whether teaching low-income residents how to use a computer, small businesses how to utilize technology to their advantage, municipal staff understanding the fundamentals of economic development, or nonprofits how to identify and prepare successful funding applications, the SJVRDC facilitates self-sufficiency for its rural stakeholders. In order to obtain its own level of sustainability, the SJVRDC implemented a model of social enterprise that allows it to generate a modest level of revenue while keeping its services accessible to the rural communities it serves.
