The Strategy takes an integrated approach to address multiple risk factors affecting the health and well-being of children and youth. In December 2008, the After-School Strategy was identified as a key initiative in the government’s Poverty Reduction Strategy. will focus on supporting after-school programming in targeted priority areas across the province where some children and youth in grades 1-12 can benefit from new or enhanced after-school services focused on physical activity, healthy eating and nutrition, wellness and personal health education as well as benefit from specific programming identified by communities to meet local needs or needs of specific age groups such as youth employment programming, homework help, cultural and arts activities and knowledge of community resources and how to access them. Throughout the development of the After-School Strategy and in preparation for a September 2009 roll-out of after-school services, the Ministry of Health Promotion has been working closely with partner ministries and many of you to ensure a coordinated approach.
