Each individual SR is a huge effort to identify all relevant research information for a specific health question
A unique feature is we connect reviews and their included studies….
This orange triangle is the result of really hard work. It is what the reviewers thought was the best available evidence to answer one question at the moment of publication.
This information is only available in the full text of the review, unstructured, non-informatised
We rescue this information in Epistemonikos database.
But why this is so important?
In order to access information quickly, we need to have everything organised by question. We need expedite access to the “body of evidence” for a given question.
The problem is there is no such thing as a list of all the existing questions.
Our approach is based in something very simple: If 2 reviews share primary studies, they are probably answering a similar question. If they share many studies, they are probably adressing the same question.
How many studies they have in common is a proxy of the question of the review.
Let’s see an example:Imagine you are going to have an abdominal surgery, and you are very worried about how much time it will take you to recover. Someone tells you that there are plenty of things you or your doctors can do to facilitate this process. You go to the Cochrane library and find this very interesting intervention…chewing gum. Unfortunately, it is only a protocol that was registered some months ago
However, you are still interested in this cheap and acceptable intervention.
You have 2 options: to postpone your surgery for 2 years until the review is finished
…or to go and look for non-Cochrane evidence.
And if you are a reviewer, you also have 2 options:
To start from the scratch, in the traditional, sysiphean way.
…or to build upon what is already known, based in existing systematic reviews.
As evidence is connected in Epistemonikos you don’t need to worry much about sensitivity or comprehensiveness of your search, since you only need to find 1 piece of the puzzle known as The body of evidence to access which pieces are connected.
