There are many applications on how to make use of brain power in our everyday lives.
First of all, we need it to communicate. As social animals, human beings have a need to
be able to interact with other people. This need is fueled by our abilities to be able to
understand, and to be understood by others. Communicating with others is not restricted
to merely speaking. As the need for social interaction increased throughout history, we
have learned to communicate through other means, such as hand gestures and writing.
The most important thing for all forms of communication is for the communicating
parties to have a common ground. Basically all forms of communication exist because
people have come to agree that a sound, a symbol, or gesture corresponds to single
meaning. For example the creature, not the word, cat is cat in English and gato in
Spanish. It would be a simple manner to teach “cat” to a Spanish-speaking individual and
to teach “gato” to an English-speaking individual if there was a common knowledge of
what a cat really is.
But if the person had no knowledge of what a cat is, he would find it nearly impossible to
understand both the words “gato”, and “cat”. In order for us to be able to communicate
better we spend our entire lives finding out what things around us, such as cats, are so
that we properly able to convey what we mean to other people.
Of course we don’t’ just learn things for the sake of being to be able to talk about it with
other people. We learn things to make more sense of the world around us. For example
we have learned how to make use of our brain power to survive. As a specimen, human
beings are very fragile. We are not as physically gifted as other animals, especially the
predatory ones, so we rely on our wits to survive.
Our brains are not only in charge of our thought process, it is also in charge of our
nervous system as well. We make use of classical conditioning, the same as Pavlov’s
dogs, to learn when something is harmful or beneficial to us. It’s how we learned that fire
is dangerous when we first got burned on a hot object. We may share that learning ability

with sea slugs, but it takes a higher form of intelligence to realize that say for example
uranium is a highly radioactive and is therefore a dangerous substance.
Lastly another way on how to use brain power would be to satisfy our yearning for being
creative. This pursuit may not be as innocent as satiating the need to communicate or as
necessary as the need to survive, but it requires the most use brain power than the
previous two combined. Whether we are trying to qualify for a job or sending a space
ship to the moon, man has come a long way in utilizing knowledge for his own use.
Now more than ever, we have come to a point where technology is king. Our ability to
wield technology, which is applied knowledge, spells the difference between success and
failure in many aspects of our lives.
