2. The Problem
In 2010, I decided to stop using single-use beverage containers.
Single use containers have a value of $11 billion annually
in the United States alone.
Corporations, in an effort to reduce their operating costs,
have marginalized these containers by lacing them with chemicals,
and making them with the lowest quality materials.
They have not taken responsibility for their disposal costs.
Consumers only value these containers for a single use.
Nobody is willing to take ownership of these containers because they
are not worth owning.

4. Open Source
Freemasonware
Mason Jars are open source freeware.
Like other forms of open source, the way they make money is implicit.
When John L. Mason patented Mason jars in 1859, he never renewed the patent.
Today, anyone can produce and use Mason Jars They are standardized, ubiquitous
and re-usable.
Made of glass: silicon dioxide, sodium dioxide, and calcium oxide;
some of the most plentiful element in the earth’s crust.
Glass imparts negligible contamination to the food it contains
Properly cared for, glass will last a very long time.
The philosophy of the Mason Jar is to allow the end user to control what goes in the jar.
The jar has a standard thread size top and is uniform in size.
A Mason jar is the perfect vehicle for reuse.

Seastained is my form of Sustainability
It is a life where I am stained by the sea
and the sea stains me.
My life in the ocean as a sailor has given
me a deep respect for the petroleum
products that make my sailing adventures
possible, this substance sustains me when I
am at sea.
Petroleum has a place on this planet.
I am in awe of the products and energy
density that fossil fuels give us.
I believe this material should be used with
the utmost care and respect.
It is a travesty that the majority of fossil
fuels are burned and that plastic bottles
and cups that will last many hundreds of
years
are thrown away after a single use.
