How Children Grow at Home
“ Hello, I am Safia. Gudda (My Dad) wants me to tell you about my home activities. Come along. Spend some time with us. See what we do.”
Our day starts early in the morning. We go out for morning walks and take care of our plants Provide opportunities to play in the fresh air Do not stop them from exploring Do not exaggerate fears
“ Maria is more interested in pictures and listening to stories. Dadda, Mama and Gudda read stories to us.” Let them select their own stories. Give them time to look at pictures and take time out to read to them.
“ We choose the book, and the time to read.” Do not limit reading to syllabus (textbooks) only.
Give them time to complete a task Develop listening skill by telling stories and giving tasks Allow children to share their experience with  other: a. children, b. adults. Do not instruct again and again Do not complete a task for a child
“ Maria Bajee (Massi’s daughter) comes over to learn as well.  My Mom teaches her how to read.” Teach a child who cannot go to school. This will make your children more caring and responsible.
Introduce the word “Time’  Fix a time for every major task Do not compromise on the “Time” Mark a place for every object. Show and remind child the proper place for different things Ask children to clean up before going to another activity
“ We draw pictures from the books we have read.” Let children express their feeling through art.
Enable children to do work independently. Demonstrate, and then let them do it. Learn to accept:  a. mistakes, b. lack of   perfection. Display their work Discuss their work Do not bribe, or punish Do not compare
“ Zainab likes to do it as well, but she likes working alone. We don’t disturb her.” Younger children prefer to work alone. Help them improve their concentration by giving them a calm and peaceful environment.
“ Next its time to take care of pets.” Taking care of pets makes children caring and responsible.
“ I make a castle. Appee builds a dam. Maria makes an ant house. Muhammad thinks of ideas.” Sand play fosters creativity.
“ Time to water plants.” Let children observe nature.
Introduce the word “work” to children Be good role models: Show interest in work Kill boredom: Provide wide range of activities We learn to select the right tools Develop critical thinking
Offer different materials and activities. Tolerate the mess Provide time to do a favorite activity for at least 45 minutes Too much TV is not good for children.
“ One last painting for Maria.” Go to bed early. Avoid going out late nights.
